Has anyone ever used any of those nifty case fan silencers? I've seen several off-brands and I think vantec makes some. I've searched all over for any possible reviews but came up empty-handed. Do they work?
 
I've always found that ear-muffs work better.

hmm....make note to self to recommend return of 128 HP Proliant ML350 servers to HP and refrain from purchasing from HP in future.:D

Damn...don't return them....I'll buy one!!!!!!!!! Those are sweet.

To answer the question, I've just gone to Radio Shack and find some small rubber washers. They work well for HDDs as well.
 
Now why didn't I think of that. I guess I've been too preoccupied lately. Did you notice much of a difference?

Yep they are nice. Our company use strictly all HP equipment from printers to destops to servers. Going thru a massive upgrade at the moment. Replacing HP Netservers with these Proliants at all the locations...approx 130 or so. What do you do at HP djnes?

Back to the original posted question... what are fan silencers...just rubber washers?

I've been considering that. My WD1200JB isn't loud when it's reading/writing, but I just can't stand the constant whine. My rig is otherwise very quiet. Would rubber grommets really make a difference?
 
Didn't some manufacturer make a hard drive tray that suspended the hard drive between some large rubber bands that were criss crossed over the drive?

Anyone picking up what I'm laying down? <---my stupid saying of the day

I work in a group called Site Services, where we handle everything from support and planning for the offices we cover, to working on outsourcing projects and company wide software testing and rollouts. It's a little of this, and a little of that, but all things technical.
 
They look like a soft plastic spacer with an air pocket in them. They go around the whole edge like the psu spacers/dampeners.
They seem seriously overpriced for what they do compared to grommets. The only thing better is that they make a full seal between case and fan, where the gromets push the fan away from the case and leave gaps.
 
SVC

SVC has the harddrive silencer you someone mentioned. It fits in a 5.25" bay and suspends the harddrive. I have read reviews that it works very well.

They also sell the fan silencers mentioned in the thread. Check em out.

Dont know how well they work. I would imagine they would reduce some of the wine associated with fans.
