Fan shims/spacing effective?

Well as I have been out of the loop forever, I'm wondering if this is still effective or if the static pressure of new fans outweigh the shim/spacing gains of old?

To this who are wondering what I'm talking about. I used to gut old fans and use the outer ring as a spacer. This eliminated some of the centre dead spot from fans (no flow right in front of the fan in the centre.

And to give you an idea of how long I've been out of the game my last build was a socket 478 p4 2.53ghz. I changed to a 2.4c then 3.0c I ran at 4ghz on an sp94. Which was just before the first tower sinks came out.
 
Spacers still improve performance. I believe they don't make as much improvements as they used to.
 
I used nuts and bolts to create a 30mm gap as I read the little testing I found to indicate that was the sweet spot. along with fashioning cardboard shrouds.
 
But when you use a fan body as a spacer you don't lose air out the sides like nuts and bolts do. Though in looking at my fans now, blade count, pitch, and curve/twist are very different.

Was just looking at my d-14 thinking I should move the 140 to the top pulling, spaced, and space the 120 on the bottom to help flow through it. I'll play around and see.
