I am doing some updating on my system and want to take this chance to update all my case fans (now 4 years old) with newer fans that are hopefully fairly quiet.

My case is a thermaltake armor + (with the big side fan). I have one gpu (gigabyte gtx570 oc with the 3 fans, fairly quiet VGA cooler). My CPU cooler is the thermalright ultima 90 with a 92mm fan Other fans is two 92mm fans blowing out at the top, (one next to psu and one blows thru top), one 120mm fan blowing out back behind the CPU cooler, one 120mm fan at the bottom front blowing in, and the big side fan blowing in.

I am planning on keeping the same setup, but add one icage to add another fan front and center blowing in (where hard drives are).

One question is, is that a good setup?

Second, if I want a fairly quiet system, which fans do you recommend for the 92m
case fans, the 120mm case fans, and the 92mm CPU fan? I am not concerned with budget, just want a quiet but effective system.

You really can't go wrong with cheap yate loon fans. Quite frankly I think that they are better than my S-flex and slipstream fans. At $5 a pop you can't go wrong.
 
just make sure you get them from Petra's Tech Shop. I have ordered some from other venders and they are different and fail much sooner. Petra's also have lower noise and theya keep my water temps cooler than others...
 
Gary from Sidewinder computers bought Petra's tech shop well over a year ago. fyi.
 
medium speed yate loons, put them on a fan controller for lower noise preference.

I was over there at Petra's recently and it kind of looked bare. The "about us" page did mention that Petra (and family) had left/sold the business, and it now seemed they were out of stock on a good many items. YMMV. It did look like it was a great tech shop once-upon-a-time! I wish it were still a fully-stocked store. Evidently they pioneered a lot of specialty equipment.
 
theyre run by Gary from sidewinders, so its no wonder PTS hasn't been 'freshened' up. I know thats where I ordered yate loons from a couple of months ago. but Sidewinders is my goto site now
 
If money is no object then Noctua, they are great. But for about half the price you can get Enermax T.B. Silence fans. I use them in my HTPC machine and they are super quiet and move a good amount of air. They can't be heard in my system since my EVGA GTX 460 fan is the loudest in the computer. In fact the Enermax fans quieter then my i5 2500K stock cpu cooler.

They come in 80mm, 92mm, 120mm, and 140mm.

Here they are in my system. As you can see the 140mm(top of case) doesn't have the very nice halo frame.

These also come in Manual adjustment, PWM, and LED sytles. I'm using the fixed RPM ones

I'm partial to Noiseblocker fans. That said, they are quite pricey. As one reviewer said below, Noctua's are also excellent (and expensive). I just find the color scheme to be hideous.

On the cheaper side I don't think you can go wrong with Zalman F3 FDB fans or any of the FDB fans made by Thermalright.
 
That's a tough question. The one piece of advice I'd give is, don't believe all the DB levels given by the manufacturers. Look for some online reviews.
 
When it comes to 120mm fans for ultimate silence go for Nexus Real Silent fans, orange ones. Not the strongest air pushers but undervolted they are completely inaudible and at full speed they are quite smooth sounding too. They are sleeve beared though, and are not recommended for horizontal mounting. One of mine mounted that way started to click after 1 year and few months.

Scythe Gentle Typhoons are also great. On low RPM they are also very quiet, but not as good as Nexus as the tone is bit different. They push more air however, and being ball bearing the placement is not an issue that might affect their lifetime.
 
How about 92mm fans, I need one for my CPU heater (a Ultima-90) and two for the case. I understand with the CPU cooler static pressure becomes a concern also so I want to make sure I dont mess that up.
 
Xbit has some extensive testing on 120mm fans: <1350rpm & >1350rpm
...ofcourse, not all the fans were covered, but good reference there (especially how different between the fans' spec vs test number ;)).

About yr setup, you may consider strong directional for intake fans & high CFM for exhaust fans

Noctua are good but not cheap the flex and ULN ones are decent though. Forget the 92mm one junk not even remotely quiet. Noiseblocker again good but too expensive.
Nexus are quiet but they don't last so forget that.

Gelid are great, long warranty, good prices and long life bearings they are also very quiet and offer temp controls, PWM and 3 pin fans you've got everything covered nicely forget anything else Gelid are the way to go IMO
