I'm still using the stock fan on my V8 and I was hoping that you guys could suggest a better fan. Some fan noise is OK as long as its not a wind tunnel loud. :)

With the stock fan my i7-920 @ 3.8Ghz runs in the mid 80s.

http://skinneelabs.com/coolermaster-v8.html?page=3 - Here is Skinnee's review of the V8.

The stock rifle-bearing fan outperforms the Scythe GT AP-15 (highest RPM option). The Scythe GT is a great fan, and I'd recommend it if that level of performance is acceptable. However, it's clear that the V8, with its multiple towers, is a high-restriction heatsink demanding a high static pressure fan.

If you could custom-mount multiple fans, that'd be best.

I'm not sure you're going to find anything much better besides maybe options from:

http://www.overclock.net/air-cooling/724577-well-dressed-megahalems-65-fans-112-a.html - ehume's huge megahalem's test:

- Coolermaster Blademaster (designed specifically for high-pressure) or R4 (9-blade version) - But you may need to undervolt some.

For inexpensive auxiliary fans:

- Yate Loon D12SL-12 from Sidewinder, Petra's, or Dangerden: http://www.overclock.net/air-cooling/819736-yate-loon-d12sh-12-round-up.html

I tried putting a Nexus 120mm fan in place of the stock one and didn't notice a diff in temps at all. The CFM on the Nexus is 76 @ 2000 RPM and the stock is 69 @ 1800 RPM.

I'm considering getting an H50/H70 because my ambient temps are around 80°F-85°F and the V8 only keeps my 920 @ 3.9 GHz in the around 80°C-85°C. It would keep my old 920 C0 @ 3.7 GHz at around 65°C somehow with the same ambient temps. I've tried re-applying thermal paste (two different kinds too) 4 times now with no better result :(.

That Nexus Real Silent is simply a Yate Loon D12SL-12. That particular one is PWM-controlled, while the original is a lower RPM Yate-variant.

I think you'd need multiple fans to get good performance out of the V8.

THe H70 seems to perform well, but only with the use of its loud fans (I guess the case with the v8 isn't very different). The H50 has limited thermal capacity, but does well within those limits. The only reason the H50 is appealing to me is that one can mod an extra radiator into the loop, and then it becomes competitive with high-end aircooling. I just wonder how much strain that puts on the pump (I'd assume it voids warranty).
