Hey guys,

I am working on selecting the components for a new build (posted here) and had a few cooling specific questions.

1. Fan placement/orientation
Here is the layout on the Define R3
* 1 rear Fractal Design 120mm @ 1350rpm included
* 1 front Fractal Design 120mm @ 1350rpm included
* 1 front 120mm fan (optional)
* 1 bottom 120mm/140mm fan (optional)
* 1 side panel 120mm/140mm fan (optional)
* 2 top 120mm/140mm fan (optional)

If I am going to put seven total fans in this case, which ones should be intake/exaust?

Should I aim for negative or positive pressure?

2. HSF
If heat is going to be an issue on this build, should I consider a different HSF, or possibly add another fan to the 212 plus to move more air?

3. Fan Choice
Should I get four 140mm fans and one 120mm, or all 120mm?
The 120mm Yate Loon D12SL-12 on Jab-Tech are crazy cheap right now for some reason at $3.20 each. Is that normal?

The two scenarios I have in my head are:
1. Four quality fans able to handle the heat requirements allowing the noise dampening material to stay in place.
or
2. Seven total fans needed but low speed to reduce noise impact.

Not sure if #1 is viable. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Tvaz

Also interested in the answer to these questions. My build is quite similar!

aim for equal pressure, keep in mind you PSU will have a fan as well. so that's 8

front bottom and side panel should all intake air, top (psu) and back should exhaust. (heat rises, use the top fans to accelerate this effect) front fans intake to keep your HDDs cool, and the side fan will keep your vid card fed with fresh air. bottom fan will keep cooler air in the case for the CPU to consume.

i know yate loons are good fans, cant speak on the ones listed however (for noise), maybe someone will chime in.

i know scythe gentle typhoon is a good quite fan ($$), compare specs.

no idea about your HSF... sorry

120mm vs 140mm that sized case, both are fine, good chances are 140's will spin slow and be quieter while moving the same amount of air. i would stick with cheaper 120's unless you can find 140's that are just to good to pass up.
