My friend just gave me his old processor, with the fan, and all I can hear is this fucking blow dryer sound coming from my computer...
Is there any way I can make the fan use less power, to make it quieter? it's terribly loud!
 
Look up a 5 volt fan mod. Apart from that, buying a variable power light-switch or a pre-made fan controller is probably the way to go.

My friends tower had a fan switch, and I think he left his on low, my tower doesnt!!
is 6,500 RPM a little excessive!?
 
lol its probably either over-volting or its a tornado/delta. My advice is try find another fan and it on instead or do that volt mod.
 
controller is the way t ogo. they are 7 bucks on new egg. or a 4 channel one is arounf 18. Lol 6500 RPM thats a but load. Id buy it off you what socket type are you using?
 
well, before i give any advice on how to quiet it down: what sized fan? on what heatsink? what are your temps running load and idle?

if you're running hot, then slowing that thing down is a bad idea regardless of how loud it is. in that case you need a new heatsink and or fan.
 
If you tell me the socket type i can recommend a better heatsink if your temps are really high. Maybe go to BIOS and configure the Voltage if you can.

You have to be careful about fan controllers on the CPU...
 
It's running at 22 - 30 Celcius, at 6700 RPM.
Um... It's the stock CPU fan for a barton 3200+...

there is no way that your CPU temps are that low.

not with a stock cooler, not with room temperature air. those temps would be unusually good for a liquid cooled machine.

what are you using to get those numbers?

thermal probe, or software monitoring?
what program?
socket temp, or processor diode?
a64 or a32?

i might believe those temps for a socket temp with a nice cooler, but not for diode temps and a stock cooler.

oh, and my sis' machine with my old SP-97 and a dialed down delta gets temps like that at 2.3-2.4, but that's not a stock cooler.
 
okay......if you really do have the retail box cooler, have you made sure that no wires are rubbing on the fan? it the fan plugged into the motherboard fan header? have you enabled the Q-fan option in the bios to see if that helps?

the asus temp diode is in the bottom of the socket, and typically reads more than 10C lower than real processor temperature.

if your goal is to quiet things down, yes.

do all of this at stock speeds, though, just to be safe. once you have that running properly, then maybe try for an OC.

normally, i would not be telling seomone who would also like to overclock to do this, but since my own A7N8X deluxe rev. 2.0 would not do more than 191 FSB fully stable, regardless of processor cooling, i'm suggesting that you quiet it down enough to make it tollerable, and then try upping the FSB a few MHZ and then add voltage as needed to stabilize it.

a heatsink/fan combo that would allow for good and quiet overclocking is more expensive than would be worthwhile to spend on a system like this.

i'm not just trying to be mean about this, it's something that i have looked at in canadian prices. for the price of a good OCing a32 chip, a NF7-S motherboard, reasonable overclocking ram, and a good overclocker's heatsink, you're very close to the price of a decent a64 system. (assuming equal vid card, PSU and drives for both systems)
 
Im using a 15 dollar heatsink my proc was OEM. I jsut bought my Tornado today. What volatage should i set it at. anyone have mod site?

a pair of scissors and some small marettes will do the trick cheap.

you can also pop the pins out of the molex block and do it that way, i just find that it does not always make good contact that way.
 
Oh, alright cool I dont want it waking my mom at night. Also i can seem to find a OpenGL download ANYWHERE. Do you know any site with one?
