Are fan grills dead?

Remember all the places that used to carry hundreds of designs?

Now there's like 10 stores that carry the same 6 designs.

Plain wire grilles in matte black look cool, the designer ones are a bit naff and cause huge restrictions. Those mesh ones look cool as well, IMO.

plus they can cause noise. i think people are starting to look at the case as a whole versus a cool (i.e. fan grills) small feature.

To be honest I think there's only so much you can do to make a fan grill look cool or 'bling' it out, before the cool factor starts becoming more of a hinderance to performance.

Like some of the ones that Plycon sells. As badass as they look, some of them just look more like a hinderance than anything. They even state that they're more decorative than functional.

At least that's my opinion on them. They do look pretty sweet. I just wish there was a way to get a perfect match of bling and cool factor without compromising one or the other, or doing a Lil Jon/Nelly number involving diamonds and ridiculously expensive metals that would better serve being put on actual computer components and not cases.

I use very open fan grills (Atomic ones) to prevent people from sticking their finger in there while at the same time allowing airflow. Its not much to stop them, but it helps. I put fan filters on my intakes though.

ive got a mudflap chick fangrill. that thing aint guarding shit. lol

it's so open that air obstruction is totally minimal, but it looks neat. Really the only reason for modded fanguards beyond colour change is purely aesthetic.

I have only one grill, just a traditional circular wire job, on my side fan, since that's all I really see.

Whatever happened to those custom painted fancy grills that Xoxide used to carry?? Can't find them there, or anywhere else. Man, those were pretty funky......very cool looking, pretty expensive due to the custom paint job.......but damn, I bet they were also VERY restrictive in airflow!!

There is no easier way to make an already loud fan sound like a vacuum cleaner than screwing a "custom" fan grill on it.

Plus, most of them don't really do anything practical anyhow, they just look good.

Classic wire grills > fancy grills which restrict airflow & increase noise levels.
Save the fancy metalwork for side windows and such.
