One of my case fans is making an occasional rhythmic clicking sound that last anywhere from seconds to minutes. I know which case fan it is because I unplugged it while the clicking sound was occurring and the sound stopped with the fan. There are no wires touching as it has a dust filter in-between the fan / case inside. Will a simple fan replacement fix this? Or could it be an issue with the PWM connector on the motherboard?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
 
Sounds like your fan is failing. I had a couple that presented similar clicking issues and eventually they die due to bearing failure.
 
I have a Slipstream 120mm fan that just slows down and got hot just a few months after I got it. I just tear it down and clean out the old lube and put some air tool oil in it. Fixed it right up and has been running for some months now.

Check to see if its running hot.
 
Thanks for replies. There hasn't been any dip in performance yet, but I plan on stopping by MC later this week to pick-up a new fan and some backups.
 
Yeah, it's probably the bearing starting to go. If you live in a dustier environment or have a fair amount of dust buildup in your case, this can contribute to premature fan failure. It's always good to keep them nice and clean!

Case is only a month old and has been cleaned out twice. I feel like it was just a "bad fan" from the start, but having to replacing a $10 part is not worth a RMA process for a new case.
