Do they actually work? Reason i ask, is i pulled my computer apart yesterday to install an audigy2 zs, and noticed that my cpu heatsink had been clogged up with dust (probably the reason it had been running 4-5 degrees hotter), so i took that out, cleaned it up, reseated it with new paste, and now its fine

but to keep that from happening again, would it be possible to put a filter overtop of the fan, to keep the dust out of the sink? then i guess i would only need to clean the filter off instead of taking the sink out every couple weeks

You need to stop the dust before it gets to the CPU sink. You can put filters on your intake fans for your case. I personally have filters on my intakes but I also make sure that I have more fans blowing in than out. This will give you positive pressure inside your case and help to keep the dust out all together.
