Fan Filter Question

When you guys use Pantyhose for fan filters how do you do it? Do you cut out the part you need and then just squish it inbetween the fan and the case or do you stretch it and then put it between the case and fan? Do you do anything to the edges to keep it from fraying or just leave it and when it starts to come apart replace it? I'm sure I could think of more quesitons but none come to mind ATM. So...please share your experiences with this fan filter medium. Thanks:)
