fan controller and cpu fan..

so i have a panaflo M1A 120mm fan ontop of my xp-120, and i want to control it with my vantec fan controller. question is, will the motherboard let me turn on the comp if i dont have a fan plugged into the cpu fan jack on the motherboard?

even if i wanted to plug the fan into the motherboard, i cant, because the fan is 3-pin, and the motherboard jack is 4-pin.. and both the 3-pin connector and 4-pin jack are keyed, to the point where no matter what, i cant stick the 3-pin on there.

(motherboard i have is dfi lanparty sli-dr, if anyone has it, maybe you can help me out)
 
your motherboard wont care, but go into your bios and turn off fan monitoring on that port otherwise it will give you annoying alerts and if you run asus probe (or sim program) it will say you dont have a cpu fan...
 
k. i did a test btw, and something was messed up. i dont have my case yet (newegg decided to ship my case on a different day.

i wanted to see how loud my fan was, and if the fan controller worked.
i hooked up my psu to my motherboard, and then plugged the fan controller into the psu, and attached the fan to the fan controller. when i hit the power button on the motherboard (i have a dfi lanparty sli-dr, it has power buttons), everything turned on. problem was, the second i touched the knob on the fan controller, everything turned off... whats goin on??
 
so expanding on the testing i was doing before, for some reason, even without the fan controller, the only way i can get the motherboard to stay on is if i have a fan plugged into either fan controller 4 or 5. if i put it in the cpu fan slot, it turns on for 1/2 a second, and turns off. same with fan 2 + 3. hmm.. should i not be doing this??
 
well if its shutting off i would sudgest not... remember most bios boots run the processor at 100% so it will fry your processor pretty fast... so keep your hand on the PSU power switch so if anything goes funky you can kill it fast
