Fan control based on CPU temp/load?

Is it possible to control speed of a fan from the mainboard, based on CPU temperature or load? The fan does not have speed control wire but I get it that the mainboard can PWM it?

Sorry for noob questions but this is my first time playing with fans :)
 
If the MB has a 4-pin CPU fan connector, this is supported by default (though you may need to enable fan speed variation in the BIOS). If the fan you want to control is not the CPU heatsink fan, you can get an adapter to connect both to the CPU fan header.

If the MB doesn't support it, you might be able to find a hardware/software combination that supports this - hardware to vary the speed and software to measure the CPU temp and control the fan. I'm not aware of such a device offhand. Since so many MBs come with 4-pin CPU fan headers, I doubt there's much demand for such a thing.
 
The fan is 3-wire (no speed control) and yes I'm looking for a software which can control fan voltages/pulse widths based on temperature sensors.
