What's the best heatsink/fan combo for cooling a Pentium 4 over 3GHz? I've been using the stock fans for awhile but I may be getting a processor soon that doesn't come with the stock Intel fan.

Price isn't an issue. But it must fit an Asus P4C800 Deluxe. Your thoughts and experiences are appreciated.

BTW I intend to overclock. :)

Price not an issue? Probably Swiftech MCX-478-V or Thermalright SP-94. As for fans, get the biggest one you can strap on to it. the SP-94 only takes up to 92mm, but for the MCX, you can get an a adapter and put a 120mm on it. The MCX is obvious more expensive (~$50 w/o fan, SP-94 is ~$45 w/o fan). Both of these will require you to take off the motherboard to install however. Anyone else have any thoughts on these? I'm thinking of getting one of them for my p4p800.

Well I said price isn't an issue because I know for a kick ass fan you're likely to spend $50-75 for it. It's worth doing right.

sorry to get off subject, but i also have the 478-v and it rules. my temps are about 53 max under load. so hardwired, how difficult was it for you to remove the ihs? and also, are you using shims on the proc so you dont crack the die? i dont know about yours, but my swiftech fits on VERY tight

what is IHS?

That metal plate on top of P4s and A64s. It protects the core when the heatsink is on it.

thanks, is it a good idea to remove it?

Its at your discretion. I personally wouldn't touch it, but I've heard it does lower your temps by a few degrees since the HS is now in direct contact with the core. But your could just end up with a cracked core, especially with a HS as large as an MCX-478. All depends on the risk you want to take, and how careful your are in installing the HS.

I have no intention of removing my heatspreader. I just want the best air cooler that I can get. I don't want to tackle water cooling yet but I do want to overclock more than I have over the last few years.

I vote for the sp94 with a panaflo 92mm h1a.

Dropped my temps by 10c (compared to stock).

Be sure to get some as3 or something comparable.

my swiftech is teh r0xx0r. Just lapped it and my box is runnin at 50C max load (2 instances of [H] folding)with my tornado turned down as far as the controller will let me, and my AS5 hasn't cured yet (as i just re-installed it). But i also hear the sp-94 is the same or better. Whichever you get LAP IT its worth the time dropped my temps 4C instantly!:D
