Hey guys, I've been biding my time and saving my money for new hardware come October/November/December...

Does anyone know when the projected nForce4 chipset is to debut, or the new high end socket 939? I heard that "Toledo" the DualCore AMD is about a year away, but there will be something new for the holiday season. I'm not ready to plunk down cash until I can find a system (probably A64-FX? unless intel can show me better) with a next gen proc (90nm? or better?), good solid mobo w/DDR2 dual channel (Cas2?) and 2 PCI-E 16x slots with a full 32x channel onboard, not that 16+8 that Grantsdale is running.

With this in mind, can anyone give me an overview of the new tech coming out oct-dec? Would that be a good estimate when the new standards will have emerged? Thanks

You'll probably have to wait until next year for all the really good stuff to come out for AMD. For this fall, expect maybe 90nm chips and PCI Express; Socket 939 is already out.

Probably the bigger push this winter will be for retailers to try and push the Athlon64 into more entry-level markets. Expect more lower-end Athlon64 chipsets, like the KM800 that Via has already pushed out the door with integrated video.

Most new computer tech won't debut until after the new year because the tech that was current in June-July is what the consumer will get for Christmas, due to the lead time needed for ordering. DDR2 probably won't happen until AMD does a chip revision on the Athlon64 due to the memory controller being integrated into the chip.

Buckus has spoken, all hail to him. Sounds about right to me.

Thanks! 90nm and single core is what I'm shooting for by Xmas. Would you happen to know if 939 is going to be the standard for high end AMD procs for awhile. For instance, would I be able to upgrade to Toledo or other dual core next year? I

I'm not totally stuck on AMD, as I'm happy with my Intel Northwood 3.0, but after the faltering of prescott I'm cautious. Think they'll be able to seriously compete with the AMD64-FX line anytime soon? I hear the next AMDs will have SSE3 included.

Thanks again. I'm just trying to get my upgrade roadmap togeather...
