I've been having problems off and on since July. I'll try to sum up everything I've done as best I can remember. I posted here back when it first started in this thread.
After I thought I solved the problem it eventually came back. The error message still refers to \Device\Harddisk0\D, not \Device\Harddisk1\D like it originally did.
My two hard drives are configured with C: the 250GB WD, and D: the 400GB Seagate. Because the error changed devices, I wanted to narrow it down to which drive was actually having the problem. I moved the drives from SATA ports 1 & 2 to ports 3 & 4 on the MB. The next time it logged the errors it was \Device\Harddisk3\D, which would have been the Seagate (if Harddisk0 is port 1, Harddisk3 would be port 4). I left the Seagate on Port 4, and moved the WD back to port 1. The next time it logged errors it was back to \Device\Harddisk0\D, which now is the WD. I put two new cables on the drives, but that didn't fix it either.
Every time it fails to boot with the "Error loading operating system" message, I could unplug the D: drive and it would boot right up. If I shut down and plugged it back in it ran fine for a few days before giving me problems again.
One time it failed to boot with the "Error loading operating system" message again, but I didn't feel like opening the case and unplugging the Seagate so I tried something different. I went into the BIOS, disabled the SATA controller, rebooted, then it says "No operating system found" (obviously). When I go back into the BIOS and re-enabled the SATA controller, it booted up just fine.
It has not failed to boot with the "Error loading operating system" in a long time, but recently it has started to give me a BSOD on bootup when I turn the system on fort he first time. After rebooting, it boots fine and doesn't do it again until I fully power down the system and startup from cold again.
The last thing I tried was re-flashing the BIOS, but that didn't help. The last batch of errors occurred two days ago, but the error is different now. This is the new error message:
The MS Help and Support site for that error say that it is caused by either a failing HD, cable or controller card, so that is of no help to me because I already know that.
I'm thinking it might be the MB, but I still want to be 100% certain before I spend money to replace it. Both of my hard drives are still under warranty, but the MB is not. The only things I can think of to try are installing Windows to a new HD, which I don't have, or getting an addon SATA controller and moving the HD's to that.
Either of those still require me to find a way to consistantly re-produce the errors, which I can't do. They usually crop up while playing games, but sometimes I can play a game for hours without it giving an error. All of my games and the page file are located on the 400GB Seagate D: drive, which is strange because the errors point the finger at the WD C: drive.
