Failing Drive?

I have a 180 GB WDC (partitioned to a 20 GB partition for WINXP, and a second partition for the rest of the space). I also have a second 27 GB drive. My computer boots to the 20GB partition. A few months back i realized i had a bad controller card where my two hard drives plug into. Music would jitter, system would hang...etc. I was too lazy to get a new controller card so u plugged my hard drives directly into the MOBO (ABIT no more than a year old). I plugged my dvd burner into that controller card. After i did this Mp3 hangs went away but system hangs SOMEWHAT remained (much noticeably less). Anyways, recently in the past day or two....my computer freezes (mouse still moves) then it restarts and says it can't boot to the hard drive. If i hit CTRL delete it still wont boot to windows. If i do a HARD boot (complete shut off) i can turn on the computer and boot into windows. At that point its only a matter of luck if i can keep my computer running in windows for more than and hour to two before it hangs and restarts again.

Is the controller card that just my burner is plugged into causing these problems again? Or is this the sign of a failing 180 GB wdc drive?

Anything will help. Thanks,

Z
