So a few weeks ago my PC was sitting with a black screen unresponsive in the morning. So I hit the power button and it immediately shut off. Fired it back up and botted like normal except for the fact that it wanted to run a CHKDSK of Dive C: for some apparent reason...I stopped it before it started the scan and continued booting. That is when it said updates failed and it was uninstalling/rolling back or whatever the hell it said.
I went in to Update History and it showed KB5101650 had failed to install. I looked it up and saw numerous people showing issues but it was supposedly only Dell PCs with the issue. So I paused updates for 3 weeks. I have a custom PC with MSI X670E Tomahawk MB and 9900X CPU running Win11 Pro 25H2 with all updates prior to this KB failure.
Ahead to this past weekend when my son wanted to play Minecraft but the Minecraft launcher would not open, nor any version of the game directly. This has happened before but it was a Microsoft issue with an update to the game that hadn't been done so it just did nothing until I updated in the MS Store...problem solved and it worked. Not this time as there was no update.
So I decided in my infinite wisdom to enable Windows Updates again and let it try to do its thing again...failed the KB5101650 again and also noticed Audio, Bluetooth and some other drivers failed to update as well. Hmm, was the some MS bullshit with an outdated BIOS and that Secure Boot crap. So I update my BIOS to the latest non-beta. Of course in the stress of shit going wrong I forgot to save my BIOS Profile to a USB drive lol.
Anyways, now I get a choice of selecting Windows 7 or Windows 10 upon boot (like a have a dual boot which I don't anymore). Selecting either gets an error and doesn't continue, but hitting the ESC key at that menu allows the system to boot.
I can not update any drivers for Audio, Bluetooth, WiFi or GPU. I have no sound, no driver for GPU active because they all fail to install from files downloaded from he MSI site and NVIDIA site.
Ran SGC /scannow and it shows corrupt files (bthmodem.sys) but can't fix it. Ok, ran DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth which finished successfully I believe and then ran SFC /scannow again and still can't fixt it. What the hell!?
Looking at my Event Viewer it shows NTFS errors going back at least a week and needing to run CHKDSK /F on Drive C: and that the Drivers directory under Windows has issues. Ran it and still no luck. Not sure if that failed update above caused all this. I haven;t ran DISM or SFC since doing CHKDSK, but may try that again as I have nothing to lose right now I guess.
Not sure restoring from a week old backup will do anything if it has corruption as well.
Anyone ever run into a situation like this before? Really don't want to do a fresh install for various reasons. Will an in place install/repair or whatever its called work to repair/replace corrupt files or will I run into the same issue since whatever I get from MS will have that KB in in and install will fail?
