Hi all,

It appears my Raid 0 failed this morning. On first boot up it woulden't recognize one of the drives and on other boot ups it recognizes the drives but one of them says "Non-Raid disk" ... I don't think theres anything I can do?

First of all... these were both identical

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136012

From what I understand these were pretty nice HDD's ... my only complaint was the constant chirping noise of HDD's searching.

I use the PC mostly for gaming and internet usage. My fiance uses it for Photoshop files and pictures.

I need to know two things:

I have heard mixed reviews on if Raid0 is really worth it...what' my best bet?

1. Buy a 1TB HDD and set up non-raid (is the speed difference big?)
2. Set up in another raid besides Raid 0 (how much slower?)
3. Set up in Raid 0 against as it's still the best bet for speed/performance

We do have a external HDD we backup to occasionally

I would say what I would like is as follows

1. Speed
2. Noise.... I would really prefer something more quiet than what I had
3. Price... not really high on money right now but I do want something that is as fast as what I had

thanks for any help

Well after a bit of digging I think I may go with 2x WD6401AALS .... the 6400AAKS has great reviews and this appears to be the same drive with the added cache. The price is also very good.

I think i'll stick with Raid0 and keep backing up. Fiance does a lot of Photoshop and some video editing so I think sticking with Raid despite it's problems is the way to go.

Sound good?

I would go with a single Velociraptor 150 or 300 depending on your storage needs. If you work with very large files, then you can add a second large drive for storage. The Vraptors are quieter and faster than what you had, so going to 1 will be almost as fast as what you were using.

IMHO unless you are looking for bragging rights on your buddies, RAID 0 is not really needed for most people. It will not help with your gaming, and will only help with Photoshop if you work with very large files or are working with small amounts of RAM. Maxing the RAM on the rig would be a lot more help than having a RAID0.

BTW, your dead Raptor should still be under warranty. Check the serial number at the WD website.
