failed OC... problems arose

first, my system

Asus A8N-SLI Premium
Maxtor 250 gig / 7200 RPM / 16mb cache
NEC 16x6x16x DVD-RW (um... i got 2 of these)
kingwin mach 1 550W
AMD64 X2 4400+
XFX 7800 GT x2sli
Corsair TWINX Dual Channel 2048MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz
win xp pro sp 2

I was using the nvidia n tune program to try and boost the memory a bit, granted i didnt really know what i was doing, but thats not what i'm asking about... when i applied the changes, the computer locked up and when i tried to restart it, it takes about 15 or so minutes just to boot windows. i reformated the HDD, this plus the reinstall took about 6 or 7 hours (not exadurating) after the reinstall boot times are still extremely high, also tried reseting the mobo with the CLRTC jumpers and still the problem persists. I even tried an old hdd that still had XP on it and the problems are still the same.

the memory does get very hot while 'attemping' to boot.. cpu temp seems to be normal. haven't tried another power supply yet but dont know why that would have broken at the same time as my fiddling about.

any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Did you check in the bios to see if all the mem and cpu settings are correct? Some thing to try is to pull the CMOS battery for a few minutes, put it back in then go into the bios and load optimized settings. Have you used any program like cpu-z to see if the cpu and mem settings are at the correct speeds.

My roommate had the exact same problem with his system after he overclocked to far and had to back it down. He has almost the same mobo you do too.

Im not sure if this will fix it for you. But what he did was remove his Optical drive from the IDE cable that was attached to his HDD and put them on seperate IDE cables and it ran a LOT faster at boot. It had something to do with the Optical drive reading slower than the HDD so it slowed the HDD down at boot...not sure why it only happened after he overclocked, but it wasnt the first time id heard of the A8N doing this.

you know amd dual- core optimizer , dont tell me that you don't have it installed,
allso you need the windows dualcore driver. both can be found from amd homepage, here's a link 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Utilities & Updates.
