This is kind of scary when you really think about it. The sad part is that it's not "if" this will become reality, it's just a matter of "when."

Soon anybody with a high-resolution camera and the right software will be able to determine your identity. That’s because several technologies are converging to make this accessible. Recognition algorithms have become far more accurate, the devices we carry can process huge amounts of data, and there’s massive databases of faces now available on social media that are tied to our real names. As facial recognition enters the mainstream, it will have serious implications for your privacy.

I'm far less concerned with Joe Blow holding his phone in my face and knowing my name than I am every government and corporation being a couple dollars away from knowing my every move and my spending habits and using it to predict my future actions ... which obviously doesn't concern me much since I still move about and buy things in a manner that allows me to be tracked.

I'm sure Google is just salivating at the possibility of even more privacy intrusion and data profiling.

yeah, but the difference was really that you didn't know people could recognize you, and it wasn't instant.
Now there'll be instantaneous facial recognition in the hands of the masses.
Here's an interesting app that already does it in russia and the problems that people are having with it: Face recognition app taking Russia by storm may bring end to public anonymity

Wow, that has got to be a tremdously successful coupe for the Soviet Internal Security Forces. Think about it. If you wanted a way to track your population there are many ways to do it. But the biggest hurdle is getting enough sensors out there collecting. Then you have the issue of people learned where you put your sensors and avoiding them.

But with this app, you voluntarily enlist the entire population to be your sensor base and they don't even realize that they are tracking themselves and working for their own government.

China has nothing to worry about, obvs.

Another reason why you don't use your real name on social media. And if Facebook quotes a policy at you, you simply say, "fine". And delete your account.

The gathering and use of mass recognition systems should simply be one of those "Massive constitutional breach, major felony, national security risk, go to jail forever." things. We CAN stop this. It's not like the software for this just magically writes itself and forces itself to be run in server farms and spreads like viruses to every device in the land.

We are reaching a point where some of these concept systems need to be treated like nuclear weapons or money counterfeiting. Yes, you CAN do it but neither your own country or most of the rest of the world will LET you do it.

Maybe your name, but not mine.
I'm not on Social media, I haven't uploaded any photos of myself to the cloud, and the few relatives that use facebook have been told not to post pictures of my family members.

The tech is already there, in fact it's been in use by nation states for years. And what you upload is wholly irrelevant, if you've ever been caught on CCTV you're probably in the system, if you have a drivers license you're definitely in the system. To put it plainly, you're in the system.

I am nobody, so I am not worried about the government... they would go, aha, Ducman69, we recognize you... and don't give a damn because you're a peon.

What I am worried about is that I cut off some douchebag racing up the shoulder of Highway 69 to bypass traffic because they're so much more important than everyone else, and don't let him illegally pass, and then on my way home from work I find him waiting for me behind the bushes at my house with a crowbar. Or I am on my way to a Trump rally, just minding my own business, and a guy takes a picture of the crowd and gives it to all his gang buddies and they go on a crime spree vandalizing and/or stealing property and I come back home with my windows smashed or TV missing or worse become a victim of mob violence.

I trust random people far less than the government.

So I'll be wearing a mask in public until the government outlaws it?

It'll be a shame, since my face is really nice.

Any joe blow? Really? What happens if someone makes a social app directory based off your face and people volunteer to populate it with info like your friends and family so they have your name/city with your face without you even asking to be part of that directory. Now imagine someone tags you as a child molester in that directory. For the few hours you walk around, this app is popping up you're a child molester to your friends, family & co-workers. You can make them take it off your directory but by then the damage is done. That rumor will follow you to your grave.

The movie Minority Report had facial recognition - the billboards showed you custom ads. They also used it to identify the guy when he was a target.
This technology has good and bad uses. It would be good to help out with Amber alerts, some people won't mind custom advertising (although I don't count myself in that bucket).

That's the major issue I have with this kind of technology. What the bad guys in government do with it along with the bad guys out in public, it always seems like the bad uses for it far outweigh any benefit it provides to me, and actually takes more and more of my safety/privacy/anonymity (safety in numbers) away from me.

Almost (almost) as if it wasn't created to ever help me be better off in the first place.

What does being able to identify me in person have to do with making up bullshit about me and my family?

When I had my passport photo taken, the girl had to take about a dozen shots. Adjust the lighting, move closer to the backdrop, etc.

I asked what was the deal, she said I had shadows behind my ears! The State Dept. had kicked some pics back for similar reasons, the ear shadows supposedly throw off the facial recognition detection. I guess my beautiful mug is in the State Dept. database now - withe correct ears and all.

Somehow I don't think those Trump haters/rioters have any where close to that level of sophistication.
When one of the reporters tried to ask a couple of them questions, they had a hard time putting together a coherent answer. About all they could do was repeat the same lies over and over.

Its not too far fetched for someone to make a system that sees your face. Then back tracks everything you've done in the last year. And make a guess based on what you did if you're going to commit a crime, buy something, or sell something. This kind of data then can be sold to retailers, or your name may be given to police as a possible threat.

This kind of thing may be scifi today, but its just a matter of when it happens and not if.

I will now be selling masking makeup made from super tiny micro computers, beetle dung and natural pigments. This make up will emit a photo sensitive signal to issue the preprogrammed personality/identity of your choice.
For a limited time we will offer stick on moles, warts and ear tips to help you keep off the grid.

Wear a beard and have your long hair out flowing. When you need to go incognito, shave and put your hair up in a hat. Stupid fucking software wont know dick.

You guys do understand it will always be stupid fucking software, right? Artificial intelligence is pipe dream. Software and hardware can't think. Never will. If you think it can or will, then you are just as stupid as the fucks trying to talk you into believing it is real.

Just because we don't have it now doesn't mean we never will. There are attempts out there today that are making strong headway into that field. If you don't believe me, look into it yourself.

List of artificial intelligence projects - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There's a list of a few, and not nearly all or even the most successful ones, that are being developed. I'm not saying Skynet is going to rain down on us tomorrow, but AI is a real thing that people are really working on.

Facial recognition doesn't pay a lot of attention to hair. It uses your bone structure - distance between your eye sockets, part of your nose, maybe your chin.

Also things like IR mapping of the blood vessels in your face. I doubt facial hair will obscure that very much.

Hell my wife had a picture of me and her on Facebook and I raised cane until she took it off.I guess my face is all over place.Doesn't matter I guess since the cop's gave me a ticket for speeding the other night and took a picture of me.Shit fire
