I wonder how you can tell if you are part of the one percent (6 million people) they are testing this out on? I guess you could repeatedly type stuff like "boobies" over and over to see if your ads change. Mmmmm, boobies.

The closest Facebook has come to real-time advertising has been with its most recent ad offering, known as sponsored stories, which repost users' brand interactions as an ad on the side bar. But for the 6 million users involved in this test, any utterance will become fodder for real-time targeted ads. For example: Users who update their status with "Mmm, I could go for some pizza tonight," could get an ad or a coupon from Domino's, Papa John's or Pizza Hut.

If I type "Mark Zuckerberg can suck my dick," will I get a coupon for Mark Zuckerberg BJs?

I've noticed this, for a while now or at least it seems. Even not just advertising but friend's profiles that I view more, their albums are displayed in the sidebar a lot more often than others.

Just one more reason to stay way from the FB. Great tool but putting too much in it, fuck and no.

I really hate Facebook. I can't believe it is seen as innovative.

Not that I would ever use lamebook in the first place, but this is pretty easily rendered useless.

Adblock..they can mine all the conversations then want and it won't matter one bit. :D

Its just like Googles AdSense that everyone loves, but since FB is doing it it is evil?

HAIL THE GOOGLE OVERLORDS.

DOWN WITH THE ZUCKERBURG DOMINION.

That is all, thank you.

This is what is actually what is called targeting augmentation. Since you can't reliably determine a user's position through a reverse IP lookup, because ISP's don't always accurately update the IP listings, Google has had to resort to comparing your location through other sources. They'll pull location data from your router, your gateway, your Gmail, etc if necessary.

As it turns out, it's actually a very good thing. We often think of advertising as an always-evil-thing, but when you're actually looking for something in your area, it's much better than the alternative - no results at all. Neither Google nor Microsoft will display an ad or listing if it can't determine where you are. From the end-user standpoint, it means having fewer choices if your location isn't known.

Yahoo also uses targeting augmentation, although it pulls its data differently than Google does. Even still, it's quite accurate, and even allows you to sometimes see ads outside of your targeted area. Want to purchase a carpet cleaning service for your mother 10 states away? On Yahoo (and Google I believe), just do a search + the area, and chances are the ads you see aren't actually targeted in your area. That's called targeting override.

Bing is the only major search engine without any targeting override or targeting augmentation. It pulls your location strictly based on a reverse-IP lookup. I guess for being a new[er] search engine, it still in the teething phase, as both Google and Yahoo have been around for quite some time. Personally, I love Bing, but it has its limitations. Reverse IP lookups also have their limitation though. It's not federal law for an internet service provider to *have* to keep the IP address locations up to date, and since we've run out of IP address, ISP's are buying up old dial-up IP address ranges in droves. Unfortunately, that IP is often still registered a few hundred miles away, and that's where targeting augmentation comes in handy.

So with Facebook getting into the targeting augmentation business, I don't blame them. It's good for business. It's good for the consumer. And really, do you think Mark Zuckerberger really cares what your opinion is of yesterday's favorite TV show? He gives just as much of a shit as Google does - not at all.

Adsense doesn't mine private IM conversations

they are not private really, you are posting them via a public system form so to speak if you want to get technical, also, it is only taking keywords, not like they take your name and info and post it for the world to see who said what, sure when you sign up on facebook, you agree to let them do all of this.

if you are concerned about privacy, disconnect your self from the net.

So long as it doesn't use the information to make suggestions to the rest of my friends list I don't really see the big deal.

But I really don't need it suggesting to my mum and co that they should also take a trip to anne summers or have they also tried out strawberry lube after mining a private message conversation I've had.

How does mining work for those running ad blockers?

Still happens because your posts are stored server side where all the processing will be done you just won't see the generated ad if it is caught by one of the ad blockers filters.

all I'm interested in is boobies, why does assface zuckerberg have to be involved?

Because he doesn't want just you to like boobies. He wants you and all your friends to know how much each other likes boobies and talk about it with each other and introduce other friends to each other who also have a fondness for boobies and then spend the day on facebook talking about loving boobies so they can best ascertain how to sell things to you using the allure of boobies.
