Facebook says its so-called breakthrough advertising program “Beacon” went too far and is allowing all 55 million users to permanently turn off the feature. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg wrote an open apology on his blog:

"We've made a lot of mistakes building this feature, but we've made even more with how we've handled them," Zuckerberg wrote on Facebook's blog. "We simply did a bad job with this release, and I apologize for it."

Where are all the analyst and marketing gurus that were calling this “breakthrough” just last month?

I think those were the people raking in money while facebook users suffer the ads ;)

when will he apologize again and let you delete your account and erase all the personal information on their servers? right now you can only "deactivate" it and everything is saved.

This owner thinks he can just apologize and everything is OK. This is like the 3rd time they've fucked up. I'm really close to personally emailing them to remove my account and all related information from Facebook.

If they refuse to give people the right to delete their data, Just "update" your profile with false info.

Looks like a new trend.

They only have to "accidently" pull this crap once and they gotcha. Start pulling "accidents" every so often, and they keep laughing. They only have to catch you once each time to feed their advertising databases.

And after reading how much they think they are worth (15 billion), that's a helluva lot of ad dollars coming from somewhere, and these kids just keep feeding the man while the man keeps pulling these accidents for a reason.

I'm still surprised people are willingly giving their full info and interests and stuff under the guise of "social networking". No wonder these things are thriving so much.

What you put on the net stays on the net, period. The concept of erasing hard drive content simply doesn’t exist.

A few years ago Comcast did something stupid ( I know, the list is long) and I moved to Verizon DSL as my alternative. After two years my wife was actually willing to have sex with me again if I could find a faster service.

Comcast had done some major upgrades so I switched back. It seems my old usernames were still available as were my wife’s so the switch was quick and easy.

I went to activate my Comcast web space only to find it perfectly intact, not one thing deleted not one word missing or changed.

Two freaking years and nobody cleaned up the servers? Inconceivable!

An apology wouldn't be enough for me,this a blatant invasion of privacy and they should be facing,at the least, heavy fines and civil actions.Perhaps if they start shutting down sites like this for such violations they'll finally get the message.

Boohoohoo, listen to you all, crying over something so stupid? Wow an Advertisement, I use Facebook thoroughly and it didn't affect me whatsoever, I hardly even noticed the damn thing. Invasion of privacy, come on? No one gives a damn about your family photos or details on the computer, what's the worst that could happen? Your credit card details? In this day and age you can track things like that down if you didn't use it and take it to the proper authorities.

Afraid your children might get kidnapped cause they found out where you live, psh, could happen even if your computer didn't get hacked with cookies! Omg nooo, the cookies! Look out for the cookies!

Then again, what can you expect from the majority of Americans that complained, just go sue the guy in Texas or something, seems to be the trend with you all.

You probably have no children or family you are worried about. No doubt you don’t mind being added to various lists that end up in the hands of God only knows who and no I’m not even talking about Government lists, those already exist.

I have no misconception that I have any private information on the net, having my own website and making purchases online ended that possibility a long time ago.

On the other hand I see no need to advertise my personal life and details so that I may collected so to speak. As an example I recently had some issues with my health insurance and the SS commission which traced back to a seemingly simple comment I made here on the forums about a year ago.

We live in an information age, and there is more information out there on everyone then there really has any right to be and companies make Billions storing and distributing that information for a fee.
