So yea. I got this new computer, quad-core, decided to go for the SMP client. It said it installed correctly, and it works, but it won't start as a service when I reboot (in the background, automatically...). Anyway, does anyone know why this may be? I have a feeling Vista doesn't like letting things install services...

Oh yea, O/S: Vista Home Premium, x64.
 
first of all, running as a service is not supported.

When you ran "fah -configonly" did you do it as with administrative privilidges?

Oh and what version of SMP are you running? 5.92 will not run on x64. You have to run 5.91.

Yes, I did it with admin priv's.

And I guess it won't do what I want it to. Is there a way to start the program without showing the console? If so, I can just make it start up by adding it to the "Run" key in the registry...

Tray-It.

SMP doesn't like to be shut down though and doing it repeatedly may result in lost work units. If you're in a situation where the computer is going to be shut down and restarted a lot, you might want to stick with the standard client. SMP is a high-performance client with very tight deadlines.


 
There's an option in the configuration stage that asks if you want to install F@H as a service. Then there's another step that you have to do for SMP that you didn't have to do for the non-SMP client.

6. Don’t start the service yet. Go to the Services management console (service.msc) and look for the service that starts with FAH. Open the properties for that service and go to the Log On tab. In this tab, check “This account” instead of the default “Local System account” option and fill in the account you used to install the client. The account used to install the client must have administrative privileges for this step to work.

I've never had a problem with UAC on the six instances (both SMP and console) of FAH that I'm running here. As long as you set up permissions properly, you shouldn't ever have to worry about UAC. (installing outside of the \Program Files folder helps too).
 
Ah, thats right. I had them installed in the program folders. I have them on the desktop now, maybe I'll try and enable UAC and see if it works now.



 
Alright, I'll do that extra service thing to see if it works.

I don't shut down my computer that much. Usually I boot it up when I get home from school (or, on days off, when I wake up), and shut it down when I go to bed. I won't be on it all day, but I leave it on. I hope once a day isn't too bad.

Also, I'd rather not fold than disable UAC - it's a damn blessing.
 
I'd stick with the console client then. Some of the WU you would grab could take 24 hours to crunch with a 24 hour preferred deadline.



 
If you run a single SMP client, there's no reason you couldn't turn in most WU within the 16hours your system is up. But it's safer to just leave it running. Shutting down and restarting has a high risk of fucking up the WU. I've lost 15 or so in the last two months, most of which were nearly completed, due to random reboots from power outages, forced Windows Updates, kids pushing buttons, etc.

Like I and many others have said, SMP is not meant to be run that way.



 
Alright then. Is there a way to set up the normal F@H client to run on four cores? Last time I heard it only ran on one, although they may have changed it. I would leave my computer on but since I'm still in high school for another year, I live at home with my parents, who get touchy about the computer being on when I'm not using it.
 
You'll have to copy the client over into 4 different folders, name them something like F@H1, F@H2 and so on so you can keep track of them. Run 1 out of each folder and give them a different id when doing the config.
