I wanted to join F@H, but am curious about one thing.

Is there a way to limit CPU usage, percent based? Reason being my PC is in a hot room, and is hitting ~70C when fully loaded, using stock intel cooler. I can't move the PC so that isn't an option.

I plan on gettign a new HSF, but frankly can't really afford it for the next few months, and I wanted to contribute during that time.

Also, will my ATI 4670 be able to fold at all or nada?

depending on what client you use its more or less involved to do it.

using the SMP client, when you set it up in the config, go to the advanced config the cpu usage option is one of the last settings. you can choose the percentage it uses. it's not constant though. if you set it at 70% it will bounce around between 50-100% to get your 70% cpu usage.

the other way to do it is after installing the smp client. when you make the shortcut you can set the flag to -smp 2 or -smp 3 which limits the client to 2 cores or 3 cores. when you get a better heatsink down the road just remove the number and it will go back to using all the cores that are available to fold with.

as far as the 4670 folding, yes it can but dont bother. the amount of heat and power usage isnt worth the minimal points it will get. maybe down the road when the openCL client comes out that might change but until then i wouldn't fold with it.

also on the heatsink, keep an eye on the CM hyper 212+ they regularly go on sale for under 25 bucks and is by far one of the best heatsink you can get for the money and will easily last you 5-6 years so its worth the investment.

Theres nothing wrong with 70c under full load.

Nothing at all. My old Q6600 would peak into the 80s on a warm day. And what sirmonkey said, the CM 212+ is a very good budget option. I used one on my Q6600 starting from day 1.
My xeons have been at 75c for 2 months straight.

A little update.

Picked up a Corsair A50 for $15, couldn't beat the price for a decent HSF. Yeah, the CM Hyper 212 is likely a better HSF, but I'm pretty impressed with the corsair so far.

Temps dropped from peaking at 72C to peaking at 48C on the hottest core on full load.

Full speed folding is a go. :)

Quoted for being full of awesome! Nice temp drop - but now you know that you can never go back to a stock intel cooler, right? ;)

Very nice. I saw the A50 at bestbuy for 39$ I think.

What made me notice was I mistakenly thought it said H50. Had me ready to buy all in stock:confused:
