F@H on a prod server?

Anyone here do it? I'm not talking so much company servers as most people would not really be allowed, but I'm talking about more people who run their own web servers, home servers etc but relatively still need/want the performance.

Is there any issues with having F@H on such machine? Aka not a dedicated crunching machine. From my understanding the cpu priority is very low, so it should have zero effect other than maybe using up a bit of ram.

I actually have my own team, Iceteks but my site is so dead that I'm thinking of just canceling my team and joining [H] and I have a couple machines I could even add. Currently I only have my workstation crunching. I could probably add my web/game server, home VM server and my pfsense box, provided it wont cause any performance issues.
 
not on a company production server ever, period

failure analysis will show exactly what was running on the server when performance took a nosedive and people start to panic and your ass will be fried.

At home or in a private lab you can do whatever you want.

But production servers @ work no F*ing way
 
I had two minor issues. The first was website slowdown due to bandwidth issues during -bigadv uploads, but QoS solves that. The second issue for me was noise. I couldn't stand the high pitch whine of those 1U fans running at full speed, even while in the basement.
If it is your own server give it a try, you can always stop it if you discover any other issues.

For stuff you can run it on without worrying about your job. Why not. Just watch your other applications and make sure their performance does not suffer.
 
as far as performance goes, no there isn't a huge effect on other applications performance as long as the priority levels are higher then the F@H core/application. it will release cpu cycles to what ever application requests it. if they are memory intensive applications that require a lot of memory bandwidth it may effect that performance but play with the checkpoint time if needed to see what gives better performance.

that about sums it up IMO
 
I have a prod server here, I never, EVER install anything beyond work items on it. On my other PC's in my office, I have free reign, even have Steam installed and Brink and Black Ops on my office PC, if I ever have free time, I can do as I please.... but on a prod server where my boss accesses it, or even having the risk of a VP accessing it, no way!

I run smp on my home/web server, specs in sig. I have not noticed a slowdown from running it.
 
meh, I ran F@H on production servers when I was in the school board for years without issue
 
Good to know, I think I'll go ahead and give it a try. And like I said, these are servers that I have 100% control over, that I own, not company servers.
