I got 2 ps3 off ebay for $150 shipped (one missing a HD, the other one broken blu-ray drive) and my personal ps3 will be folding. :cool: I have one running as we speak, Im setting up the other two. :D

150 each. yes the one with busted HDD is like new. plays blue ray movies and games. all I needed was a HDD.
 
Ok, so you have inspired me. How would I look for a damaged but repairable PS3 on ebay?

I would want to be able to fold obviously, but also play games and watch Blue-ray Movies.


Would this be a good candidate? Or is there anything in the description I should look for specifically?

I also found some that were fine other than the Blu-ray drive. Would buying one of those and putting it's hard drive into one with a non working hard drive work? Or am I just stabbing in the dark. Is the PS3 hard drive special or is it just a laptop hard drive?

I dont want to bid against you, but if I can slide a 60 GB (or whatever) HDD in there that would be great.

That would not be the one you want.

It has to power on to be able to fold.

I wouldn't worry Kendrak. There are TONS of PS3s on ebay with broken hard drives. Just type in PS3 and search. Click on used and for some reason you have to click systems and PS3 again and look around. Many of them are pretty cheap too, although with many days left in their auction. I have never really done anything other than get it now on ebay, but i wouldn't be surprised if the $30 PS3 goes up quite a bit between now and 6 days to the end of auction.



 
Also, make sure that you look for one of the newer PS3's, the ones with the 45nm Cell processor. The performance is the same, but they draw less power.

Is there a backwards compatible one with the 45 nm processor? I am fairly certain I would like backwards compatability, but I don't know if that is completely possible with the other stipulations. I am most lenient on this because I have a ps2 right now.

The 80GB is backwards compatible with the new 45nm chip I think. I solved the back compatibility problem with my 40GB (there is none) by getting a PS2 as well. It will also work without too much problems and I can game while leaving the PS3 folding ;)

The reason I got both is because I'm a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series and most of them is available on PS1 and PS2 with FFXIII to be released on PS3 in a few months (I was introducted to the series when I got a free Final Fantasy game with a NINTENDO POWER subscription on the NES and I fell in love).

 
let us know if your power bill goes up considerably, I own a ps3 and I've read that it takes as much power as a mini-fridge

Its about 200W for the older models, and about 140W for the newer ones.
 
Correct me if I am wrong, but by putting them on their sides aren't you blocking a major vent on the side? I thought there was airflow in the back and across the unit... thus sitting flat was the ideal position.

The vents are only on one side. As long as that side is up, you'll be fine.

My personal is 45nm but the ones I got are 65mn
 
I've got a 45nm PS3, and love it. I replaced the HDD with
a 160 (easy, with instructions available on the web). I like
the folding (set it and forget it), and the possibility to listen
to MP3s while folding. I also view digital photos on the HDTV
and, of course, use it with BlueRays when I find time to
watch a movie. But, next to folding, I like Rock Band! I have
never experienced so much continued game fun since my
old 8088 running Trek88. A taco to anyone who remembers
that game.

The 45nm has a "fan test" that you can use to blow out the
dust. Power down the unit, after exiting folding of course,
and then turn off the power switch on the back. Then, holding
your finger on the "eject disc" area, turn on the unit. It will
run with fans on full for a short period, and then return to
normal fan operation speed. Then, just start the unit going,
and restart folding.

I've had my unit since Xmas, and I'm nearing 1000 WUs with
it. I wish I could say something as good about my Rock Band
playing. :)

I did not ralize that... gotta try that when the WU finishes.
 
The "fan test" does appear to be for the 40GB model only, but here's something for the 60GB model. 20GB and 80GB models look to be out of luck still. And of course, Sony's official stance is don't do it.

TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK. I searched google and found on gamespot a post about 60GB fan test. It says to just turn the PS3 upside down vertically so the vent is on the bottom (do this in mid-air to prevent blockage of vent) turn on the system and wait about 10-15 seconds so the heat rises causing the system to start to OVERHEAT the fan will then step up in increaments about 3-4 stages until its at full speed when you feel it is done blowing out enough dust. Place back in normal position or it will actually go into an OVERHEAT mode where the system warns you of the condition. It works just do not let it get to the OVERHEAT stage and everything should be fine.

So, I won my first eBay auction today. I have made contact with the seller and we have corresponded a bit about what happens now. He will be sending me my new PS3 as soon as PayPal gets their grubby paws of my money. I will get it folding as soon as possible and order parts to repair the drive as soon as I know what the real damage is. I am excited as crap.

i use to do this with the xbox 360.. as long as you bought a 360 that had the entire ring of death.. you could send it into microsoft under the warranty.. then 3 weeks later they would ship you a brand new one.. if it wasnt a full ring of death.. then it would take 6-8 weeks while they tested the unit

then id resell them on ebay.. was great..
