F.E.A.R Resolution Issues...

Ok...

I bought F.E.A.R. because I've been waiting to play it and my new watercooled machine is more than capable. AMD 4200+ X2 @ 2.5, XFX 7800 GT Extreme Editions (SLI), 1 GB Corsair XMS Pro. I get around 12300 on 3DMark05, 8100 3dMark06 and 116 fps in Doom 3. So there's no question about the capability.

I was trying to max out the settings in F.E.A.R. and I was able to set everything on maximum, graphical detail, effects, etc... But what's buggin me is that I can't set the resolution above 1024X768X32... I want at least 1280X768.. what's the prob? it only gives me 3 choices...800x600; 640x480 or 1024x768. I KNOW people play this game at higher resolutions so why can't I?? They even review this game using higher resolutions! I must be missing something.

All other games let me go to much higher resolutions..COD2, Far Cry, Doom 3 etc and they all look great and plays very smooth and sharp. So what's the deal with F.E.A.R.??

Any F.E.A.R. veterans out there that can help?

It will only run in 4:3 resolutions. I don't think it has widescreen support.

unless you go to

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Monolith Productions\FEAR

then edit Settings.cfg in notepad, enter any resolution you want for Screenwidth and Screenheight, save and restart FEAR. I have it running fine at 1680x1050. Just don't think you're guaranteed good frames even with that setup.

Ya, FEAR really needs 2gb of ram to play at maxed out settings

Ok.. I'll try this...

I changed the resolution in setting.cfg saved it and went into FEAR. I really can't tell a difference. And my display choices hasn't changed. But when i go back to setting.cfg it still says "1280" like I set it...

Normal?

Your choices won't change even if you hard code the value into the CFG file. In fact if you change your resolution in game, the only way to get your custom resolution back is by editing the CFG file again, so it's best to just set it and forget it. Seeing as how FEAR is perfectly capable of running all sorts of resolutions and aspect ratios, I don't see why the developers didn't make this easier to do without manual tweaking.

Yeah, it is annoying, and yeah that is par for the course. :(

Just make an autoexec file so you don't have to keep changing the resolution every time.

Yeah, if you set the resolution in the CFG file and then actually click on your display settings, it goes back to the default settings. So change your CFG file and then don't go into the display settings! :)

Yeah I kind of had to figure that out the hard way...and it played perfectly in widescreen aspect ratio of 1280x768. I was getting right at 54 FPS average and it never dropped below 42 fps with EVERYTHING on maximum AND soft shadows enabled. The developers said that the game should be played in 1024x768 to get the best 'effect' at the end. I ended the game today actually and it ran great. Can anyone say F.E.A.R. 2?

Hope I don't have this prob with Quake 4...

Works fine at max settings on my set-up with "only" 1 GB of RAM......

I'm gonna say thats cause you have 512mb video card and pc4400 ram, useing pc3200 and a 256mb card I'm sure would yield much different results but yeah at least you can play it I haven't even thought about trying to play fear. My rig, check sig, would probably have a heart attack if I tried playing it.

I've played it on worse before (128MB 9800SE, 512MB of system RAM). It wasn't the prettiest but it did play on medium settings @ 800x600.

I've played on 1280x1024 on with eyecandy :) with only a 6600 and 4gb of ram, I dont know why you cant? :(
