Just played through Fear for the second time and am still confused as to what happens toward the end. Could someone please shed some light on these questions.
1. Is alma dead or alive?
2. Alma is Alice Wade's daughter, but is that the same chick who I encountered in the game being held hostage?
3. What ever happened to the other fear squad member (forgot his name)?
4. Is the character you play as linked to the whole fiasco in some way?

I'd say Alma is dead, but of course alive as a vengeful spirit.

Alma is not Alice Wade's daughter, she's Harlon's.

They deliberately left it vague as to what happened to Jankowski.

Your character is Alma's son. And you're also (half?) brother to Paxton Fettel.

If you haven't watched the credits all the way to the end, you should.

If i got something completely wrong, somebody please correct me.

How is it possible for me to be Alma's son? And be related to paxton Fettel ?
Also, Alma actually killed her father?

Near the end, Fettel says to you "We were born from the same mother." It's implied at several points in the game that Fettel was Alma's son. When you're in the underground bunker there's a recording on a laptop that you play stating that Alma died several years ago inside that sphere thing. And if YOU were a 15 year old girl whose father used you for no other reason other than to punch out a couple telepathic kids, take them away from you, and lock you up, wouldn't you be pissed?

Alma is your mother. You were one of the prototypes. Fettel, your brother, was the other. Harlan Wade (your grandfather) was Alma's father, the blonde hostage lady that you rescue (and Fettel ends up killing) is Harlan Wade's other daughter (so she's your aunt).

Its all starting to make some sense now, expecially given the natural ability you have to slowdown time. But why exactly is Alma "Mom" trying to kill me?

Oh, by the way, this is one F@#$%d up family.

I wish you could've joined Paxton instead of being forced to kill him. That's B.S. You're brothers, and the pedophiles you're working for raped your mother and then killed her.

...Why am I still working for the bad guys?

I would assume it's the same dealie as MGS3 and Big Boss... the mission comes first.

I just replayed the F.E.A.R single player, so here is my brief take on things.
Its actually a plot worthy of a movie, its quite well thought out imo. Spoilers.

1. Armacham (along with top US Government Officials) decide to attempt a project which will allow them to create and control cloned supersoldiers via telepathy. This project is called Project Origin, and is headed by Harlan Wade.

2. To do this they take a very powerful psychic (Alma, a young girl at the time - she is also Harlan Wade's daughter) and impregnate her to obtain prototypes. You (the player) are Alma's first born son, and Paxton Fettel is the second born son.

3. Alma was pretty much forced into doing all this against her will, (almost torture to her) but the last straw for her was having her sons taken away from her and not being able to see them. In anger she used her psychic powers to take control of Paxton and cause some 'disaster' in which people died. This is mentioned a couple times as the 'previous disaster' in the game sometimes.

4. In response to this, Armacham decided to kill Alma, so they pulled the plug on her life system support (or whatever it was called) in the vault - however it seems that even though she is dead her spirit lingers on. Armacham knows Fettel is psychic, but they are not sure about you.

5. Now (probably some years later) the game starts. You are part of the first encounter assault and recon team (FEAR) whose current objective is to control the rebellion going on inside an Armacham building, where Paxton Fettel (the main target) has taken control of super soldiers and is killing everyone in the building. Of course, you do not know he is your brother at this point.

6. Fettel escapes the building, but he has a micro chip in his head which allows a rough estimation of his location, thus begins the main chase of the game, you chasing Fettel. However wierd things begin to happen, finding corpses mutilated, seeing "visions" (including that of a little girl), and chaos between armacham, civilans, and military.

7. During tha chase you are given new orders to secure Alice Wade, who is Harlan Wade's daughter (and thus effectively Alma's sister). She is probably now a target for Paxton Fettel as she knows where her dad is and how to get to him. Paxton however eventuall captures and kills her, and eats parts of her body. (Paxton Fettel has the ability to 'learn' what people know by eating their body parts).

8. You eventually head down into the vault, where via a semi-hallucination you kill Fettel. Harlan Wade is down there and heading to where Alma's corpse is locked up. Harlan opens the vault before you can reach him, immedately after you see him killed by Alma. Harlan knew this would happen (he said monsters destroy their creators just before he is killed). Alma here appears to no longer look like the little girl as before - but a much older yet emaciated figure.

9. You now have to destroy the facility by blowing the reactor. You do so (occasionally fighting off Alma's apparitions, she doesnt want it destroyed) and when it blows you miraculously survive. At the very end you hear Genevive (Armacham's president say "the first prototype was a success" - she's referring to you).

Thats basically it, awesome plot for a game imo :)

-- Why was Alma doing those 'bad' things, like killing or using Paxton to kill ?
This is open to interpretation, but 'Alma' means soul in spanish, she possibly was simultaneously yearning to have her sons back as well as exact revenge, so probably did not mind killing her sons as it would allow their souls to be free so she could be with them.

--Why does Alma look like a young girl, then suddenly like an older girl at the end ?
For most of the game her corpse is locked in the vault, she looks like a normal little girl, as she would have looked before she was imprisoned by armacham.
Once the vault is opened, you see the 'true' Alma, as a much older girl whose body was subjected to extreme physical stress.

--What ever happened to the other fear squad member (forgot his name)?
Jankowski ? He dies. Originally you were supposed to find his corpse in the game early on ( stuck on a wall as if crucified iirc) but they decided to just have him disappear to make it more mysterious.
I believe he will cameo as a corpse/spirit/whatever in the fear expansion.

They leave a lot open to speculation, so I'm not saying my interpretation of the game is 100% accurate. Though I did have to replay the game a couple times as playing it through just once wasn't enough for me to grasp the story.

Great Read! The way you listed the key points of the game really depicts how much thought actually when into the story itself. More so that doom 3 or even half life. I'll probably end up replaying it once again just to have it fresh in my mind for when I play Extraction Point.

How stoned was I when I ended this game?! I did suspect I was related to the little girl, but I didn't clue in to anything... This thread has provoked me to replay FEAR again. I wish I'd paid attention more the first time.

if any1 remembers that part where you are in the hospital (near the end of the game) and its kind of like a hallucination, and you hear a baby crying and you have to go to it...or something like that, but Alma's inb your way so you pop some caps in her ass and she leaves, i thought it seemed like she was trying to hug you or something....

Darkatom's post may have explained this, but you're wrong.

Armacham and F.E.A.R. are two seperate entities. You're working for F.E.A.R., and Armacham is trying to stop you, and F.E.A.R. is trying to stop Armacham.

I just beat the game a couple days ago. FRICKIN' AWESOME!

Yeah, this game is fricken gnarly. By the way, who do you think is hotter, older Alma or younger Alma?

You just made me taste a little vomit dude.

I just finished the game this weekend. I liked a lot of it, but it feels very "unoptimized" no matter what kind of rig you're running, though. The framerate's just a little too up and down for me.
The plot's kind of neat, because they're good at revealing a little at a time and telling you the story without throwing it right into your face. Half-Life's one of the few other games that did this well.
The only real knock on it (other than performance-wise) is that the slow-mo sort of ruins the game once you learn how to use it. Even on the harder difficulties, it's just too easy to keep using it to score an easy headshot or two. If you don't use it, the game's actually almost too hard...so you're really stuck having to abuse it. It would be nice if there was a little more middle ground or if the enemies reacted to it better.
Maybe the expansion will tweak it a little.
Oh yeah...maybe I'm weird, but I hate when games don't have a final boss...maybe it's just me. With all of the Fettel hype, it would've been nice to have to face his final wave of personal soldiers or something.

I liked that. HL2 also didn't have much of a final boss. It made it feel more fun, not, *bam* and the game's over.

Agreed on SloMo though. I tried playing without it sometimes... damn! I <3 SloMo. :D

Haha. Sorry, I's just playin'. :)

But I definitely agree that this game has a really good story, almost as good as Final Fantasy VII. Hell I still get a little choked up thinking about Aeris now and then, hehe.

What I'm trying to figure out is who that guy in the beginning cut scene is. That guy standing facing the corner, twitching, who starts to turn around, but we never see his face? I think this character gives the "You were born here, in this place... I was there..." voiceover. We never find out, that I can tell. It certainly isn't Wade. Haebeggar, maybe?

I always thought the voice was Fettel's.

There's no way for that to be Fettel. Fettel was the second prototype, born after our protagonist. From what little we see of his face, the guy appears to be an older gentleman.

Im going thru the SP campaign, and im at the point where you go into slowmo and you see Jankowski's apparition or spirit walking around and disappearing, Now my question is who says this line 2ce "Is someone there?", is it you because you see him and you ask that line or is it Jankowski's spirit?

I don't think it's you. I don't think you say a single word through the whole dame.

Could it be Harlan Wade? Those are my only two guesses.

There's an interesting story behind that one. The man is a doctor who was helping Alma give birth, and was obviously driven insane by it. According to one of the developers, her psychic powers were also supposed to have eaten away most of his face (leaving him with eyes and very little else), but in the end Monolith thought it would be creepier to leave him turned away from the player and visibly... disturbed.

I REALLY like the fact that Alma's spirit continued aging post-mortem. It's a direct parallel to one of the things I liked best about The Ring: the concept of a movement one person set into motion taking on a renewed life and direction all its own. The fact that Alma's rage was so powerful that it poisoned the city above her for a generation after her death is worth taking away from the game, too.

I hope the expansion's good. Now that finals are nearly over, I think I'll pick it up.

This is quite a coincidence, this thread got bumped just as I started to play Extraction Point for the first time today.

I've heard that this expansion pack goes nowhere with the story, so my expectations aren't high for whatever plot this pack has. But the first few "scares" in extraction point feel cheap to me so far, as if they were an afterthought. In the first installment, many of the scares came right after a plot revelation, and so they seemed to fit into the story. Not so with Extraction Point.

Where did you find the info on that guy, Halon?

Extraction Point left me more confused than the original.. A couple of times Little girl Alma actually gives you a hand with the clones, but Older Alma tries to kill or hinder you..
And Paxton? Is he alive, or has he joined mom as a vengeful spirit?

Holiday, you will be avenged!! ... ;)

Fettel's dead. After the treatment you/I/we gave him with that pistol, his head should no longer be recognizable. And when you first run into his 'vision' in Extraction Point, he says it straight out: "You killed me."

So if Fettel and Alma are both deadly ghosts, how're you supposed to beat them in the end?

Maybe you're not. They're just going to leave the expansion ending as the end of the game/franchise. Or they'll make a few more but keep dragging it out in just this same way. That would be kind of original, but also very disappointing.

But what if, at some point during the next game, YOU die and gain new abilities besides slow-mo?

Extraction point makes me think theres something really big happeneing that we might not know. Since the whole city is burning. It seems like fettel and alma have a plan to kill everyone. Thats what I think at least.

/edit
As for alma trying to kill you and help you. The kid alma helps you, the adult alma is trying to kill you. kid alma almost leads you thru the game. She also says "dont let them hurt me". I think shes talking about the spirts and her older self.

I just finished Extraction Point. I'd give it a 6 out of a possible 10 "Gaming Bones".

A nice touch at the end is that we see the deformed-face man, he's in one of the cells in the asylum... right across the hallway from Harlan Wade. I'll post a screenshot if someone requests it.

I think that Alma was possessed by something...something extremely evil that used her talents to manifest itself into the real world. That might explain the duality we see in Extraction Point.

The pic looks messed up because fraps won't take a proper screenie of anything HDR rendered by my 8800gtx. Anyway, his face isn't distorted any more than it was in the game :p

You know, I didn't like the first FEAR game, but I enjoyed the extraction point game. Why? It finally staggered enemies in such a way that you can't just keep slo-mo headshooting everyone. If you're a natural camper I guess you can run away and hide to regenerate it, but if you play the game normally, you can't. There are a lot of pretty tough fights that force you to use the slo-mo sparingly, which was nice.
The only real knock on the expansion is that it more or less leaves you where you started. The joys of add-ons not being part of an "official" canon storyline :) They were essentially forced to keep the story in check just so FEAR 2 can more or less pick up where the original game ended.
