This is a little old (29th) though im pretty sure it was elusive to alot of people. Shows the current beta performance and IQ in the up and coming F.E.A.R. on current high end ATI and Nvidia cards, as well as frame rates on these cards including the 7800GTX.

The game itself is done in PS and VS 2.0, it is an ATI sponsored game, however i think you'll find that it has pluses and negatives currenty (in beta) on both cards. It also looks to be one of the more taxing games of the year. Worth a read if you're bored.

What +' and -'s? All I see is the X850 XT PE performing as a 6800GT does.

Sorry, no. Old news, and a beta of a game thats several months off, that obviously needs some serious work.

Maybe it's just me but I think the hard shadows look a lot better than the soft shadows. I find the soft shadows look overly done on the character model, maybe an in-between in the final game would look better?

if this is real this is really stupid: a 7800gtx @ 1600x1200 with 4aa/8af gets only 29 fps! that is stupid

probably just a poorly coded game.. doom 3 looks jsut as good if not better, but IMO doom 3 has better textures too.... and runs better.. but who plays doom 3 anyways hehe.

I've been wanting to get an X800XL for games in the next year or so in order to play them at 1280x960. The XL is going to barely get the job done.

not sure what you're talking about, the multi-player beta has been going on for a little over a month and pre-orderers of the game are being allowed in today. Games scheduled release is October.

Its a beta...game finalization and driver maturing will undoubtly show better results.

The multiplayer beta has been on longer than that. The public is the one you're taling about, both the same version. There was a single player exclusive beta as well, before the other two. Its pretty well known the beta is a very, very poor performer. Which is why I said old news. When $1200 worth of video cards, and a $800 CPU barely gets you playable frames with details cranked up, there is something wrong. Especially since they blast thru other games at the same settings. Having played all three betas, its not a very stable game, and needs lots of work done.

Yes, as I said, several months away. Auguest, Sept, Oct. Thats several.

Erm...was the multiplayer fun by any chance?

it was giving playable frame rates, you didnt read it. It was doing the same thing HL2 was, the low-high fps are crazy differences it can be teens and in the hundreds.

Look at page 4, charts at the bottom of 1280x1024 with 4X AA, not to mention, its a beta.

Isn't fear made by the same company that made that pos lithtec (something ike that) engine?

Either way F.E.A.R looks awesome and has an intriguing gameplay, beta performance isn't something to go by, I think the shown performance is great for a beta...

been messing with the stress test in the beta, everything is told as playable by the game itself except soft shadow enabling which totally chews up performance.

It definitly suffers from the same strange frame rate stutter, though i cant notice anything playing or watching, but its reporting FPS from anywhere between 10-310. All and all its very palyable on high settings with an X800XT and 1gig of ram. Smooth as butter. Should hopefully see playability with soft shadows on 7800GTX at least for single player but considering the game is absolutly loaded with shadows, who knows. Definitly has the best indoor environments i'v seen, little better then HL2 and far better then Doom3. Lookin good so far. Zero hitbox lag in multiplayer as well. You hit what your crosshair is aiming at. The engine is proving to be every bit as good as the NLF2 engine.

I read it just fine, thats not hardly playable. 9ps? No thanks. 32% if the time under 25fps? No thanks 37% between 25-40fps? No thanks. All the while, with no AF? No thanks. Then what about people who play at a higher res? Much worse performance.

Its a very poor showing beta, which hopefully will be fine tunted a lot, before release.

I screenshots don't do the game justice... when there is a firefight just the general buildup of debries flying everywhere and smoke makes things look awsome.

Its fun, very fast paced in multiplayer, but enjoyable.

Lithtech engine was decent for it's time. NOLF2 still looks great today.

ps: gerv

Well since I am going out to egt my x800xl today I would hope that this game will be playable on it.
Since I know that my card will be better than the majority of gamers video cards and such I am confident the game will be fixed so it can run better.

Just look at the old steam poll most people have 9800pro or 9600s its a lil outdated but most peopel dont have a card better than a x800xl. THe game ownt sell much if only a 7800gtx can run it on decent settings.

yah well most people don't have anything better than a 9800pro :) and almost all people I know doesnt have anything better than a fx5200 :) while I am over here running a 6800Ultra and bragging about it :) hehehe

its not damanding as everyone says.

I ran it fine on 1024x768 maxed out, EAX 4.0, 4x AA 16xAF

with a x800XTPE??? hehe.....

those settings are crap for a x800xtpe! with that card and a decently coded game, you should be able to play at much higher resolution :) wel'll just wait till the real thing comes out

yea, i bumped it up to 1280x1024 but thats where it got laggy. my friend has about the same setup as me and has it at 1600x1200, all medium, 6xAA, 16xAF

Soft Shadowing on ATi hardware?
I believe you are thinking of nVidia's 'Ultra Shadow II Technology', it's a different thing which basically allows shadows to be processed more efficiently

No, im sure he thought, as many think, that Soft Shadows was an NV40 tech brought with SM3.0 and DX9.0c. Its kinda elusive that ATI cards can do it, but many Radeon line cards can. The "X" line just has a fancy name for it calling it Subsurface Scattering which does alot of other cool light tricks. They basically ressemble the light demos the G70 used showing how they could show light passing through objects. Its still quite useless since it hammers performance but, yea ATI cards can do it just like NV cards. Its one of those things that you wont notice 5 minutes after playing with it, because it makes shadows simply look normal, so in that respect its a dissapointment unlike HDR which is noticable quite a bit, however its still a step toward realism, just need to get power to run it now :).

Third demo at the bottom shows the subsurface scattering, one of the better demos in my opinion.
