F.E.A.R. 3

...Answers to my F.3.A.R questions...

Thanks for the quick answers :) I'm definately going to pick this game up sometime whether it's similar to the first 2 or just a different worthwhile experience, nice to know a few things about it so i know what to expect gameplay-wise.

Deathprincess: I always hear the argument that human eyes aren't capable of telling the difference between 60 and 120, but there are always people who actually see a difference.

Whether what they're seeing is exactly how the difference should look or whether they just have a field of vision that can see a difference but not all the difference that theoretically should be there. I can tell between 30 and 60fps(never owned a 120hz monitor) which i think all people can to some degree, but if it was 45 or 50fps compared to 60 i don't think i could tell.

I guess i wanted to know since you can see a diff, i wonder is it the same type of difference as between 30 and 60 or is it less pronounced maybe in a way that some people can see the difference but maybe aren't completely seeing the whole picture. For example say that if the human eye was completely capable of seeing up to 120fps irrespective of some people being able to see a difference now, I think there would be a difference between the differences. What difference people see now would be different than if you were capable of fully seeing in 120fps and looked at 60 and 120.

Damn people and their hacked 120fps eyes :p, I guess it's not really a question i think anyone here could answer completely but always wondered.

A real test would be to insert a random picture somewhere in a 120fps video/game where it theoretically shouldn't be seen by the human eye and see if anyone can spot it.

Not so at all.

I have an AMD GPU system, but my son has an EVGA P55 MB and an MSI GTX 580 running a driver version from last month and the game is smooth as silk for him. No "stuttering or hitching" at all.

He has all setings on very high, FSAA. Nothing "forced" in the nvidia CP and no VSYNC.

His monitor runs 1920 x 1200.

u guys are lucky.

Well they've confirmed on the fearfans.com/forum this is being looked into a patch is in development. I just hope this doesn't take forever to get released.

installing now... I have SLI'd 470s (@820/1900) and driver release 270.61.... I guess we'll see how it goes very soon. :p finger's x'd :p

edit: it's very smooth for me @ 1920x1080 but with vsync on I get a line in the middle of my display almost like tearing but it doesn't travel up or down, just stays in the middle. I am guessing the vsync fps is locked at 30 so I'll use D3DO for that. haven't tried to hex edit the config file and force 5760x1080 yet... I hear the FOV issue is fixed but the person who claimed that isn't sharing the fix yet...

Performance is blazing fast with no stutering or hitching or whatever on my 2 580's...

I think there's a problem with the textures though. Oh wait, that's right - they were meant for 720P, dammit.

I don't know how you guys can stand the motion blur in this game, I absolutely hate it. It's motion blur carried way too far. Feels like I need glasses when I play, everything is out of focus too much when you move. I was never a motion blur fan, this game is a good example why.

Uh, that's not what I wanted to hear. I also hate motion blur. Is there no way to disable it?

The whole 30fps vs 60 fps is perfectly compared here - depending on how sensitive your eyes are you will either see a difference or you won't. I certainly do. http://www.boallen.com/fps-compare.html

Difference between 30fps and 60fps is huge, in most games. In F.3.A.R., running at 30fps doesn't bother me, however, so for this particular game, I don't worry about it.

Now, as for anything above 60fps, I don't know... don't really know that many people who notice a difference with anything above 60fps, though I suppose there are some who do, unless it's just in their head.

Anyway, it's good to see that, despite not being the "highest-end" game out there, that people are actually appreciating F.3.A.R. for what it has to offer. It's one hell of a fun game, despite the FOV, which hopefully someone patches, because I'd definitely go through it again with a better FOV.

The motion blur can get a little rough on the eyes/head after a while, but you sort of get used it, at least I did (though my head was a little swimmy after a while).

Looks like F.E.A.R. 3 devs are headed to Nvidia to work this out.

F.E.A.R 3
I can't sleep right now ! At 11 am we have to go to Nvidia and test the new patch to fix the shuddering. It is difficult cus right now we didn't had any luck. Hope NVIDIA guys help us. Crossed fingers. Nvidia guys are the best !

I experience the shuddering while walking using an AMD 6950. Just standing there, looking around is very smooth. The trouble with the shuddering is it gives the illusion that your fps' are lower than they actually are.

it works perfectly for me full hd maxxed out ~60fps. the motion blur is very annoying though. a not so great game, doesn't make you want to replay it.

I hate it too. But since I can't turn it off I will deal with it. At least it doesn't ruin the game. As for FEAR3. Loving it so far. The attention to detail in levels is crazy. Reminds me of Valve or a Bioshock levels.

Nice too see this game has dynamic shadows too. Unlike Fear 2.

Ug, I just started playing the game today. I didn't look at any of these comments before I snagged the game and I'm regretting it. After a few minutes of playing the motion of the game started to make me sick. I see someone mentioned there is a motion blur issue, is there a way to just turn it off (motion blur usually makes me sick in all other games too). 30 minutes of game play and I think I'm about to vomit.

no, there isn't.

While it's a great horror game, I thought it was a pretty big disappointment from the standpoint of the previous games. Not much horror, atmosphere worked well however. Action was good but in a game where it builds on horror/supernatural horror.. I was quite disappointed. Not to mention the ending for both Point Man and Fettle I felt was pretty meh as well. Great $30 game but not really worth $60+ for it thou.

F.E.A.R.
Extraction Point
F.E.A.R. 2
Perseus Mandate
F.E.A.R 3

IMO from best to least

HUGELY enjoying it. Just like 1 and 2, the best first run through is on the toughest difficulty (y)

Definitely hating the hell hounds though. Waste soooo much ammo on the bastards.

This is definitely the best gameplay of the 3 fear games (Although I Kinda miss melee combat, the knife is fun but the slide kick was pro. )

The G3A3 is the only weapon worth carrying sometimes :D

Played the 2nd one, hope this 3rd one would be better?

It is. The second one was mediocre. I didn't really care for it all that much. I finished it, but I really forced myself to do it. The story was OK for FEAR 2, but the game play, maps, enemies and weapons just weren't as good as those in the first game. The graphics were improved slightly but that's it. The third game is everything the second game wasn't. Graphically it's not BF3 or as good as some of the newer titles but the visuals are still good. At least on the PC. The only thing lacking is the environmental destructibility of the first game. A concession I imagined was made for the consoles and the developers didn't want to spend the time to make the game scale the damage stuff differently on different platforms as they did with the first game.

There was destruction in the 360 port of FEAR. It was mechanically the same game just without soft shadows and the equivalent of medium settings. basically.

I didn't think it was on the same level as the PC version. The particle counts were far lower as I recall.

Could be but I know it was there to some extent. I have limited experience with the 360 version but I remember thinking it was neat that they included pretty much every PC feature into the 360 version including lean and destruction. It probably was of lower quality.

I watched my girlfriend play it on console and it was pretty good as I recall but there were less particle effects, less destruction and of course, it looked like it was in 6480x480 resolution compared to the 1600x1200 I was running the game at back then. (Later 2560x1600.)

i officially suck at console gaming. I am getting my ass handed on recruit on fear 3 and i don't remember dying this much on the PC. Yes i know blasphemy...but i got a good deal on the ps3 version

I finally got the game and have played it for a few minutes. It just doesn't feel right so far. I'm especially appalled at the frame rates, as I'm not even hitting 60 fps at max everything at 2560 x 1440. Does that sound right?

I disagree. The second had higher poly counts, but the lighting was flat, shader effects were crap, parallax mapping was gone, and hardly anything cast a shadow any more.

I don't recall much destructibility though, unless you mean those fancy parallax bullethole decals.

I'm going to have to agree. The original F.E.A.R. looked better then F.E.A.R. 2. I mean sure, that game may have SSAO but F.E.A.R. 1 was not afraid of pushing the limits, though I do have to say that the immersion factor was amazing.

F.E.A.R. 3, I'm having second thoughts on. Sure, it'll be cool to play as the point-man again and the co-op sounds promising but it doesn't really sound like F.E.A.R. anymore, it just sounds like some military shooter with better then average A.I.

I agree that the first one looks better. In fact, the first one is still the best looking one in the entire series. Also, it looks like this title doesn't support crossfire properly, which explains my lackluster frame rates. I get about same frame rates with crossfire enabled/disabled. I have since turned crossfire off, as the game seems much smoother this way. Also, if I turn off antialiasing, I can run the game above 60 fps with everything else all maxed out.

FEAR 1 the best looking ? That's a bold statement.. Which I do not agree with at all. 3 looks fantastic. Plays fantastic. It is now my new favorite FEAR title.

I would absolutely NOT agree that 3 looks fantastic. What res are you playing? 1080p? Your expectations are low then.

The textures are pretty friggin' horrible - some of the worst in recent memory. Very noticable on a 30" monitor. In fact, the graphics were my first gripe 30 seconds into the game. FEAR1 actually had some amazing graphics in the day.

Parts of the game look really good and others don't. The one where you are moving through back yards in a neighborhood reminiscent of the one in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 looks extremely bad. The slums were actually decent looking.

To Each there own I guess. I don't think its the best looking game in the world. But its attention to detail is great. I'm not a gfx whore so even Valve games I consider good looking. Gameplay > GFX in my book.

New patch got released

F.E.A.R. 3 Updated

Issues addressed in this version:
* Stuttering and jerky movement at frame rates above 30 fps is fixed!
* Steam voice communication "push-to-talk" option is now fully supported.
* 4-player voice chat should no longer have audio drop-outs.
* A rare bug that would cause enemies to stop spawning in Contractions is now fixed.
* The game will now prefer Steam cloud storage over local file system storage.
* Network connection reliability has been improved.
* Support for wider than 16x9 aspect ratio displays has been added to support users with non-standard display devices and spanned multi-monitor displays like AMD Eyefinity and NVIDIA Surround.
* An "options.cfg" file has been added to the F.E.A.R. 3 install directory for advanced user customization and troubleshooting. Included in this file are options to extend the FOV on narrow aspect ratio displays, reduce or remove motion blur, and to override driver-default settings for full-screen refresh rate, overscan, letterboxing, etc.

Patch has issues:

You deserve to hear it from me first. The patch just got rolled back. We got some reports that rank and profile information was reset after playing with the patch and we're not taking any chances. I'll update more when I know more.

Ah that sucks.. But hey at least they are supporting the PC copy right :).
