F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin Single Player Demo

Played through it on Xbox, and the graphics are amazing, the controls are immesive and fun, and the combat is as good as ever. The spooky factor is good, but not over the top.

Definitely a day 1 purchase for me.

Don’t have anything planned for the weekend? Our friends at FileShack are hosting the F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin single player demo and it is definitely worth grabbing. A word of caution for those of you with slower connections, the demo weighs in at 1.76GB. All you dial up people will need to pack a lunch.

Pack a lunch? I doubt they could get it downloaded and installed before the game came out and got to the age of being put into the bargin bin.

I got mine via torrent and it was faster than fileshack. My fileshack download kept crapping out on me after ~700 mb.

lol, the demo came out yesterday, i have been had it DLed.:)

Good demo, pretty short but has some good graphics.

Played it yesterday and it was cool. Got mine from Gamershell and the servers were loaded, looks like people still love their PC games.

The only issue is the annoying stutter which others have surmised is the auto save as manual saves seem to be gone, console influence at work unfortunately.

I imagine this is going to be a problem as the game I guess is gold by now since it comes out in only 2.5 weeks.

The throw back to shogo is FRACKING AWSOME i played it and this will be the 1st game I buy of the new year NOW IF GAME STOP FRACKING SOLD PC GAMES

Downloaded it 5 megabytes a second off usenet. Great demo actually, better than I expected. I'll be picking it up the day it's released.

I am getting it from usenet right now, should take only 10 minutes.

Just played it. reminds me a little of doom 3. they could have upped the graphics on it though, I am sitting on 80fps with all the options on high. not bad though. not as high up on my list as bioshock2

you are complaining ... why?! its a visual masterpiece if you want bioshock2 you will have to wait 2010

Initial impressions are very positive overall, with a few little snags.

Graphics are improved in some areas. The First-Person model of your own leg is still really cheap-looking compared to everything else. Flashlight is weak, and still not dynamic (doesn't cast shadows). Shadows are still hard and sharp, which is disappointing considering that the original FEAR started the industry in on soft shadows, even if they were hokey at the time. Water still doesn't reflect models, and deep water is very weak compared to the original -- characters don't seem to affect it at all. On the other hand, textures are certainly much better, and volumetric lights are much improved and used a lot more, to better effect. The same high level of attention to detail is there, found myself reading book spines on one of the shelves.

Weapons are vastly improved, even if they're just analogs of the previous game. Original FEAR weapons felt plastic and cheap, firing sounds left a lot to be desired -- that's been fixed very much in this one. Reload animations are vastly improved, iron sights instead of simple view zooming. All the melee is still there, though the slide has been moved from forward+crouch+melee to forward+sprint+melee; melee animations are noticeably better, particularly the roundhouse. Bullet holes are a bit more accurate, so that the SMG isn't leaving giant holes in the walls. The mech was amazing -- I like how they gave the miniguns multiple streams of bullets just because. Very ED-209 feeling running around in it.

The horror elements are done better than the first. The subtle effects are much creepier than before, more than just a light flickering here or there. The major effects are a lot more robust and interactive.

Game didn't feel console-ish at all, it keeps right up with the original. The widescreen thing is a tad disappointing (the game, or at least the demo, doesn't support 16:10 fully, has little black bars on top and bottom), but other than that. The HUD I can get used to, I don't really like the pickup highlighting but it's not game-breaking. Combat was still very visceral, I'm pleased with the upgrade in destructability, explosions being more complex and sending more things flying, the environment feels just as good as the first and then a little bit more. I was surprised to find that they actually let you flip over cover items and vault over low obstructions (jump against something like the service counter in the cafeteria), adds a bit to the already-good immersion.

It's definitely getting picked up on release day. The only real negatives I could see to it were that some of the graphic effects are semi-dated considering modern capabilities, but if it gives the game a butter-smooth framerate on the consoles it'll be worth it I guess.

Widescreen only is terrible for those of us with non-WS 17 and 19" LCDs (or even CRTs)

I enjoyed the demo. the only thing that bothered me was the mouse sensitivity. I set it all the way down and it was still too much.

There were some scary moments in there as well. this game is best played in the dark late at night.

The demo was merely ok for me. It seems is still uses the engine from previous F.E.A.R. games. It even has the random stutters from the old engine. It better be a $20 (PC) to $30 (Console) game or the developers are shooting themselves in the foot.

this game will have no DRM except for Steam. thats right even the retail version will require Steam to activate. I dont think too many people would or even should complain about that.

I have no interest in the bloated Steam software on my PC.

Tried it once, pity but thats how I roll.

plays flawlessly with all settings maxed on my card. what kind of performance are the ati cards getting? just as good?

I'm surprised my PC ran the demo just fine.

Tech specs of my five year old machine are as followed,

P4 3.2 GHz, 1GB Ram at 533Mhz, Geforce 6800 PCIe 256MB (181.20), Vista Home Basic 32 bit, Creative Labs SB Live! 24-bit

I wrote my specs down to state my pc could run the demo at all.

Anyway about the demo, it had a similarity to the first one of fear atmosphere. Did like the mech bit as it felt like Mech Warrior.

There's a part at the cinema which definitely scared me. Did remark "shit" couple of times because the fear factor being played. Even placing the gamma at a high place, there been numerous times which make me go "ahhh" and jump a bit. :p

it looks to be a great game. i had the mech warrior feeling too. maybe they should work on reviving that franchise as well.

any chance at all that they are going to improve the eye candy on this when the final game comes out? the game looks promising but considering its coming out in 2009 its pretty limited.

Yeah, I started the FileShack nonsense and was getting 700kb/s, then went to check on Steam and I get 1.4~2.0MB/s.

The game looks good IMO. Only thing is that i didn't see much of a difference going from Medium to High on anything, looked the same.

its not that it looks bad, just not as good as I think a new game should. compared to crysis at high its pretty lack luster and cyrsis is a 2 year old (and not well written) game. I spend a good penny on my hardware (for me at any rate) and I like to take advantage of it.
