eyefinity with mixed monitors?

All of the info I have seen shows Eyefinity with matching monitors. . .
Can you do something like 19"std, 22"ws, 19"std?

I have (2) 19" already, was hoping to be able to just pick up a 22 or 24 wide screen (with display port) for the center.

Thank You,

Mike

(I emailed ATI the same question last week, no response to date)

all 3 monitors have to be capable of showing the same resolution

so as long as they can all be set to a common resolution, you can use different models.

You won't be able to run the 22 or 24 at it's native res, it will be limited to the max res on the 19. For a widescreen 22 or 24, you might not like how it turns out.

Not trying to hijack, but would there be much difference if a 1920x1200 native resolution had to be scaled down to 1920x1080 (the native res of the other 2 monitors)?

No probably not, but his 2 existing monitors were 19inch standard 4/3 from what I can gather, that will make a difference, running your new widescreen at a non widescreen res.

As we have written many times previous. All monitors must be the same resolution, but can be different sizes. All panels in the Eyefinity display group MUST be the same the same pixel area and the same orientation.

Thanks for the help, I was confused, and getting some mixed information from other websites. . . I was under the impresion that as long as the vertical resolution was the same I could mix the monitors.

As far as I can tell I should wait untill I have the money for (3) matching widescreen, or add a 3rd 19" 4/3 for Eyefinity vs. mixing widescreen and standard monitors

Since money is tight right now, I will just have to look at everyone else's great screenshots and drool. (Hoping Mrs. Claus brings me (3) 24" for Christmas)

Didn't somoene recently on the Hardocp forum show a 30" setup with 2x 20" either side in a 1200x1600 + 2560x1600 + 1200x1600 arangement working with eyefinity, they used an external app to make it work...I'll have a search for the link.

Look up SoftTH, there's a similar discussion about it here: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1464072 Looks like some kind of software tripplehead.

SoftTH has nothing to do with eyefinity aside from a similar multimonitor experiance. It's entirely software based and can be run on AMD or NVIDIA cards.

ok, so my (2) 19" I have use a max / native resolution of 1280x1024 (Nec LCD1970GX)

Looking like $300 for another 4:3 with a Dell active Display port adapter. . .

This would give me 1280x3072?

Would I be better of buying a 22 or 24" widescreen and skipping eyeFinity?

Any advise would be appreciated :)

You can pick up a another 3:4 19" LCD monitor for ~$100 and a DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter for ~$20.

I think three 3:4 LCDs in EyeFinitey would look very nice. And the resolution would be set to 3840x1024.

three monitors at 1280x1024 is nice

I love the height you get with the 4:3/5:4 monitors.

I have three 19" LG Monitors - very nice :)

I think all that's required is that all 3 monitors support at least 1 resolution that can be set across all 3 and a way to connect to all 3 of course. Glad someone mentioned the passive adapter for VGA. You might also want to check into getting a good color calibrator for your monitors to match them up. I recommend the Pantone Eye One Display 2. Some pics would be awesome when you get it setup:)

passive adapter didn't work for me :(
I could use adapter +1 monitor, but not all 3 (at the same time)
So I decided to get an active adapter, which was pricey, but works flawlessly :)

Thanks for the advise, loving Eyefinity !

Mike

Will try to get some good pics later to post

Oh.. yea the passive DP->DVI adapters aren't suppose to work.. the passive DP->VGA ones because they have a chip in them. But they are still suppose to be slightly glitchy so the active one you ended up is the best overall.

What happens with the panels that are not in the Eyefinity display group? Will those be allowed to be of different resolutions?

My questions: I don't care about Eyefinity, I just want to hook up three wildly different resolution monitors to my 5770 card. I take it this should be doable as long as at least one of them is connected to a DP port, is that so? Will I then be able to use a passive DP->DVI adapter? (Again, I don't care about Eyefinity or whatever.) If yes, what will the display end up looking like? Clones? Clones of what? What if they have different resolutions: what sort of cloning will that be?

Yes you can hook up any monitors together in non-Eyefinity mode and you can run them at their native resolution. From everything I know you still need an active DP->DVI adapter, there's nothing inherently different about running 3 monitors in Eyefinity or Extended Desktop they each need their own signal. Someone on here has posted that you can use passive when in non-Eyefinity mode but I still don't see how that's possible since there's still only 2 RAMDACs available for non-DP monitors.

The displays will end up being in Extended Desktop or Clone mode whichever you choose. Eyefinity really just adds a hard 'Span' mode. If the monitors are different resolutions and you want them Cloned, ATI's Clone mode sets the cloned monitors to the same resolution, refresh, etc. In Clone mode you *may* actually get by with a passive adapter.

Thanks, but what's the difference between "extended desktop" and "span"?

Extended desktop implies two separate views (spaces) that can rearrange to add to desktop space with a primary monitor.

Span implies one set desktop space split between monitor. The view of the desktop cannot be moved, and no hierarchy of the monitors exist.
