Eyefinity, updated AMD drivers & PLP

I'm thinking of going back to AMD with the 7970. From what I've read the new drivers will allow all sorts of monitor configurations not previously possible with Eyefinity. I have an HP ZR30W, which I keep horizontal, and would like to place an additional monitor, vertically, on either side of the ZR30W. I thought of going with three vertical ZR30W but I like having a larg center monitor and placing the ZR30W horizontal achieves that. ;)

What do you all think about a PLP set up with a Dell 2007FP (left; vertical) - HP ZR30W (center; horizontal) - Dell 2007FP (right; vertical)? The 2007FP seems to be the best match for the ZR30W in terms of resolution, physical size and dot pitch. If you have any other suggestions for a PLP set up, using my ZR30W, please share.

Thanks.

wait at least until the 12.2 drivers pop out. That is when the feature is supposed to go live.

Sounds like I might be able to unload the three IPS 2007's I've been hanging on to. :)

i've been using them almost everyday for a few years, very pleasant monitors to view long hours. Relatively thin bezels to position behind the central 30" one.

You're lucky to get black ones, I had to spray them in black...

And now I'm seriously waiting for the 7970 or 7950 if new Eyefinity 2.0 really works as expected in 20-30-20.

I seriously doubt that PLP will be supported, but if it is, there is a good chance I'll be selling my 24s and going back to a 30, with 2 20s flanking.

I hope that both you and the following are incorrect. ;)

Eyefinity is now in revision two, supporting 5x1 portrait and landscape configurations (but not mixed) exceeding 8000 pixels on any axis, the limit is now 16,000 pixels (as of AMD Catalyst 11.10).

I have not read anything from AMD saying they will support mixed view monitors for Eyefinity. Different resolutions yes, but all have to be in Landscape or Portrait not mix of each. If they were going to officiallt support P+L+P it would be front page news everywhere.

How in the hell would a graphics engine scale to such goofy resolutions. You have a pipe dream a good one but a pipe dream.

AMD Catalyst 12.2 promises to bring improvements to the preset manager and custom resolution support for Eyefinity, giving more non-native options to help tailor performance to gamers needs

An AMD engineer confirmed last year over at AMD forums that there is no plan for mixed resolution featuring different vertical pixel numbers.
However, he said that a setup featuring a constant vertical resolution (such as 20" + 30" + 20" in PLP) may be eventually supported.

I guess that we will know for sure pretty soon.

The guy also said that the current resolution constraint under Eyefinity was a hardware limitation and could not be fixed through drivers development.

That's all I'm looking for - PLP with identical vertical resolution.

Sadly it might be a limitation for AMD but not for technology in general (see links below).

I'll let the following links do the talking for me.

Snag them. I searched for weeks and only found silver. The FedEx man is delivering them today in fact.

Well we'll see if they actually ship. They're suppose to be refurbished A stock. The price for a single new one in black was insane.

I just ordered two 2007FPs from dell (off ebay, manufacturer refurbished) in the hopes that PLP will eventually be supported.
Hopefully it won't be too much longer!

In addition to this ^^ I run games in windows mode and "expand" them across all three monitors.
BF3 and Dirt3 work well this way, despite having to see the bar at the top.

Well if the wait is anything like how long it took for 5x1 Portrait to be supported, you may want to wait for halfway through the 7000 series card cycle.

Having used the beta 12.2 drivers I think you guys will be disappointed when it comes to PLP support.

If it was a hardware limitation then PLP would not work at all under any circumstances, including the desktop, orientation is governed by software and not hardware and the fact that running in a window works across PLP and progs like HTSoft means that AMD is talking rubbish.
There is nothing special about full screen, it just hides the desktop and boarders and focusses resources.

can anyone confirm if eyefinity does indeed support PLP in this setup now? that is, a 30" in the center with 2x20" in portrait mode on the sides.

i'm not clear if your response means
a) you can't confirm that eyefinity supports this setup, or
b) eyefinity absolutely does not support this setup even though they said it would
Eyefinity does not support plp. I believe you can get it to work for desktop use, but gaming is a no go.

This thread LOL :)

Not making fun of it, I have been asking this same question, since I bought my 5870 on launch three years ago. Was told back then that the AMD driver team would someday work on it, and that some point in time in the future the 20" + 30" + 20" would be doable. Well almost three years later, still nothing. At this point I doubt it ever will be an option.

Funny, that a small time developer can create Soft TH in his free time to hack this setup to work. And a professional driver team from AMD or nVidia still won't put the resources together to get this working. I know the population of VideoCard owners that have this setup, is probably like 0.05%. But still three years later they still can't find the time to make this work ? Hell, just hire the guy from Soft TH for a few months, he'll find a way to make it work.
