I've been using fraps and recording games at 60 fps at full res. I am currently running three 24" monitors at 6048x1200 resolution. Fraps is OK I guess, but 3 min of video is around 20 GB. I have tried a few different screen recorders and none of them were as good. I need a good regional gaming recorder. One that will allow me to only record the center screen (or an area of my choosing) at a decent frame rate and quality. I don't think such a program exists, but I figured I would go ahead and query here.

I just tried doing a selected area recording w/Camtasia on Batman Arkham Asylum and it worked alright recording to my SSD. I would assume you're going to need a really decent rig for it though, as Camtasia isn't really geared towards 3D image capture.

Here's a link to games that have built in demo recording (bit outdated, but still worth a look)

I guess it makes it easier to actually record - Then you can edit the demos and then convert to .avi

Personally I'd forget about fraps and go out and buy screen capture hardware.
Saying that I don't think they record at eyefinity/surround resolutions.

If you don't mind bringing the res down I recommend this:

gamecam?

Fraps records uncompressed video, so if you want something that will bring the file size down make sure your pc can handle the compression of gamecam as it will eat up more clock cycles.

Technically Fraps uses its own codec that compresses the video as it records it.. just to a very small degree.

Thanks for the input everyone. I am going to try out Camtasia. They have a free trial available. I am currently running 2x 5870s. I will be upgrading very soon to 2x 6970s at the very least, but I am holding out for the 6990s.
