Eyefinity questions for current users (tricky)

I just pulled the trigger on a new system for ~1k
core i7 920
5850
6gig ddr3
SSD ocz 60gb

Now my monitor setup is as follows:
2x 17" (1280x1024) LCD (VGA only)
1x 22" LCD (1680x1050) LCD (DVI/VGA)
1x 32" LCD TV (DVI/VGA/HDMI)

Now I was thinking about spreading eyefinity across the 2 17s with the 22 in the middle. Problem is, eyefinity requires you to use the displayport (which I will have to use anyway for 4 displays). So this would require me to purchase an active adapter (passive ones will not work for eyefinity). But does an active displayport to VGA adapter even exist (digital -> analog probably won't work, right?) So in this case, I'll need an active displayport to DVI adapter (~100$) to run this.

My biggest question is, when I do this, will I be able to spread eyefinity across just 3 of my monitors? The TV is located a distance away from the rest, so I would need a "dual" monitor setup, with 3 being eyefinity. And will eyefinity even work on the VGA monitors? I assume the displayport one has to be digital, but would normal old VGA LCD monitors work for the other two?
 
1) you can't drive 4 panels w/ 1 card
2) there is a DP to VGA adaptor, but
3) even though you can run mixed monitors as long as they all support a common resoloution, that 22" is gonna look pretty bad at a 4:3 res
 
Yes, the 5850 / 5870 support 4 monitors. Also It works across multiple monitors (my width is only a few pixels off), and as I see it, it combines them to one large resolution, therefore, the individual aspect ratios wouldn't matter.
 
as far as i know the resolutions on all the screens have to be the same for eyefinity.



how do you figure the 5850/5870 current release cards can drive 4 screens??
you have 2 dvi and 1 displayport. the hdmi is shared with the dvi. (you have to pick which one you use)
either way you can only drive 3 sceens at any one time with current cards.

just reading what youre trying to do...makes my head hurt. i anticipate alot of frustration.
my advice....don't skimp out. get 2 more 22" screens and an active dp-dvi converter at the very least, and
pray that the converter doesnt give you any problems.

ya I guess I'll just buy a monitor with native displayport or something, I'll just wait till later on it all. I didn't know the HDMI shared with the DVI, that ruins a lot for me. So unless I have a display port adapter/converter, I can only use 2 monitors? Really reconsidering this whole thing now. I currently am able to use 4 monitors between onboard (surroundview enabled) and my video card. This would knock me down to 2 unless I buy the adapters, but those monitors really aren't worth the money

So forget eyefinity, to use all 4, should I just buy 2 video cards and crossfire them?
