Eyefinity portrait issue

I have 3 u2311s setup in portrait, this doesn't seem to happen much in landscape, but it seems like in windows (2d only) that the screen that is connected via Displayport has a horizontal screen tear, that keeps moving from the left of the monitor to the right, and starts back at the left after it gets to the right, the other 2 monitors are connected via DVI, and don't show this behavior.

Weird, anyone have any input on this?

I believe this happens on 6950/6970 due to different connections being used. All 3 of my monitors are hooked up to dual link dvi but on the card one is native dual link dvi and the other 2 are using active mini dp to dual link dvi adapters.

The one hooked up via DVI specifically has the exact same tear rarely on 120hz refresh setting on the desktop only. If for some reason It is set to 60hz it always happens. I can quickly use my mouse wheel up and down and the tear moves from the left to the right. I don't have any in game tearing at all though. What I'd do, is move it to a monitor you don't focus on since your monitors dont support 120hz. I'm not sure if there is a fix for it but I believe this is just the way things are for now until AMD fixes this issue.

touche, it seems to happen to the screens that are on a different connection from the "Preferred display" I just picked up an Asus Direct CU2, maybe I'll pick up 3 DP cables and go that way to get rid of the issue.
 
Got the same thing happening and so do many others. Lots of people think its because you need a dual link DP to dvi adapter with the extra usb cable thats used for extra power.

I have the same setup with the same monitors, Do we need to Use 2x DVI and 1x mini DP? or can we go 3x DP?
 
you can go 3x DP, the 2x DVI is for people who only have DVI monitors.
 
I'll buy some DP cables tomorrow or Monday, and use the Direct CUII since it has 4 DP ports already =p without having to use a hub.
 
If you use different display connection types, this problem is permanent and cannot be fixed with adapters. All monitors have to be on the same connection origination type. For current 69xx owners you would have to buy a DP MST hub. Or turn VSync off. Upgrading to a 6990 would also fix it as it has 4x native DP.
 
Thanks, gonna use the 4 DP ports on the CUII instead, I finally ran into micro-stutter, or so i think, 60fps and it feels choppy in Dragon Age 2. weird, cuz 60fps in BF2 seems smooth as butter.

Totally sucks however the tear line is "normal" for the monitor using the non-primary connection type on a 6xxx series card. This is odd because I don't believe all of the 5xxx series cards had the same problem. I was pretty freaking disappointed when this was one of the first things I noticed 20 seconds into my Eyefinity experience. Gotta say I am not sure I would have 3 matched monitors and two AMD cards right now if I knew this was going to be an issue :(:mad:

Have you seen any evidence that this would actually fix the issue? Looks more like an non synced refresh issue. Plus if you set the DP->DVI monitor to be the preferred monitor, then the OTHER two monitors will have the tear.

Honestly from what I read he's referring to active adapters like I have, My adapters use usb to add additional power so that I can run dual link dvi as more power is required for that. I need to run dual link dvi specifically to get 120hz poling rate, or for other people who require dual link bandwidth for their 30 inch 2560x1600 panels. at single link I am in 60hz ville and still have the problem. So basically unless your monitor can do 120hz there is no fix other than to get the unicorn adapter Vega mentioned in his post above or get a special version of the card that will allow 3 or more display ports outputs. I'm not sure at this point if you can go 3 display port to 3 dvi's and not experience the tear or if it has to be dp to dp, I think as long as the 3 come from dp's on the card you should be fine but have no confirmations on this, and as mentioned you need a special card as most cards only have 2 mini dp's

I was unaware of this issue before I bought the cards and thank god 120 hz fixes the issue. I'm sure it would bother me a great deal on the desktop. Overall as long as it isn't happening in games is the main thing that should keep most uber happy with their setup.

I also have 3 U2311h monitors and I was reading about that, and decided to go with Nvidia and avoid all those issues. One of the reason I picked nvidia for my surround portrait mode. I did try to play in widescreen but it was not my cup of tea. I remember reading you need one of those 6dp cards to make it all work.

On the reference card your SOL I guess unless you find that mystical hub adapter as your not gonna be able to run 3 dp on it. It's nice to know you can mix/match adapters as long as they come from 3 separate display ports. Looks like I need to try and find a 6950 with more than 2 dp outputs that is unlockable to 100% clear the tear but as I mentioned if I run a 120hz which I do, I should be fine.
