Eyefinity over Crossfirer?

Quick question... I've got an ATi 5970. Can you do Eyefinity over Crossfire yet? Like if I plug in a second 5970 (which I'm going to do anyway in a few months), can I also use the outputs on it for other monitors that I integrate into a single Eyefinity desktop? I was hoping to do 5 screens, one in the center and two at each side.
 
So you're saying I should crossfire my current 5970 with the 6x5870? Could I make the 5970 the dominant card, or would it not matter which was dominate because the load balancing would handle everything?
 
Answer to your question: you can do Eyefinity over crossfire, but you can only have monitors plugged into ONE card in the CrossFire group. This is true of Crossfire whether you're doing Eyefinity or not.

For example, my system has three HD 5770s and seven monitors. Here are my options:

1) Tri-Fire Eyefinity, with only the 3 Eyefinity monitors on and the other 4 monitors blank

2) Single card Eyefinity, with the 3 Eyefinity monitors being powered by one HD 5770 and the other 4 monitors plugged into independent 5770s

3) CrossFire Eyefinity, with the 3 Eyefinity monitors powered by two 5770s and another 3 monitors powered by the remaining 5770, 1 monitor blank

4) No Eyefinity, no CrossFire, all seven monitors powered properly and independently.


I mostly use configuration (4), and switch it to configuration (1) if I'm about to play a gfx intensive game in Eyefinity. Luckily you don't need to remove CrossFire bridges from the card or even reboot the PC to get in and out of Eyefinity/CrossFire, so it's just a simple profile switch in the CCC to go between the options.

I know my setup isn't exactly like yours, but I hope this helps you some.
 
Yeah I'm not doing this really for an immersive windows experience. I just want 5 monitors in games, however I need to go about doing that, and I want each screen to run at 1920x1200. That was the whole reason I was getting a second 5970 because I figured I needed the horse power to push all those pixels. But seeing as how the 5970 already is, technically, in crossfire on the card (two hemlock processors), and Crossfire itself is limited to 4x, I can ONLY add an other 5970, not add an other 5970 AND one of those eyefinity 6 5870's

I'm not really sure what to do here. Wait for a 6x5970?
 
Yeah, unfortunately you can't plug those extra monitors into the bottom cards of CrossFire setups, so you have to either get the Eyefinity-6 edition of the 5870 or you are stuck with a maximum of 3 monitors :(
 
But will adding only an other 5870 to my current 5970 be enough of a boost to push five monitors at 1920x1200? That's the whole point I'm doing it for, so if it can't handle that, it would be a meaningless upgrade :/

Tough call and probably depends on the game. 3xHD5870 in Crossfire actually did better than 2xHD5970 (4GPUs) from the review I saw. Not sure if that was from the lower stock clock speeds of the HD5970s or the internal bridge latacy issues or what, but I think Tri-fire is your best option.

Problem is, I've heard mix results on tri-fire and quad-fire working with Eyefinitey. (I know Crossfire works, but heard people having issues with more than 2 GPUs). Your probably better off talking to somebody that is actually running a tri or quad fire setup.

I get decent settings (meduim/high depending on the game) on my 3x22" LCD (1680x1050) on my overclocked HD5830, which is over 1 million more pixels than one 2560x1600 monitor.

I could easily operate 6 monitors on my current set up, but that's what the card was designed to do.
As far as performance goes, I not sure if 6 X 24" monitors would be worth it. 5 or 6 monitors stacked in two rows looks like ass currently because of the bezels. In gaming the middle of the field of view would be obscured by bezels.
In windows you'd have the same problem.

Until thin bezels come out, anything over three monitors for gaming or work would be a waste of money and drive you crazy.

Questions we are looking to answer are:

1. Is this a possible setup option in Eyefinitey?
2. Does Tri-Fire work with Eyefinitey?
3. Will Tri-Fire HD5970 + HD5870 E6 model provide enough performance for 5 1920x1200 monitors?
 
I thought I remembered reading something about Eyefinity not working with more than 3 GPU's...?
