Well Im buying 3 22" monitors off a buddy tomorrow for the cheap.

Wondering, I know back in the day you needed a active display port adapter, is it still the same?

Even with crossfire?

Unless one of your 22's has a display port connection, you will need to purchase the active DP adapter. I picked up one on Amazon for around $25 a few months ago so they are reasonably priced.
