I just bought 3 NEC EA231WMi monitors. I also have a HIS 6950. I have on order a mini DP --> DP cable for the third monitor. It should arrive early next week.

My question is can I use the HDMI port (I have a HDMI --> DVI cable) for the third monitor along with the other 2 DVI ports (seeing how its 1920x1080)? I have it connected now and I'm not getting a signal but I don't know if it's the cable I have (I remember it being a little shotty in the past).

If I can't do it this way, why? I just want to do it this way until my new cable comes in the mail. But if not then whatever.

Thanks

No, you cannot use two DVI ports along with HDMI. This is because HDMI is DVI, just without sound. The whole reason DP was created on AMD cards was to get around this limitation of not being able to use more than any two outputs (HDMI or DVI) at once with existing video card designs.

Also, these companies who ship these cards without miniDP-->DP adapters are fucking retarded. You ship a card with this weird ass mini-whatever, at least have the decency to include the adapter cable.

Yeah, I'm aware that HDMI and DVI are the same thing. I just don't understand why you can't use all three of these ports in conjunction. It just seems kinda silly, especially because I don't even need dual link dvi or DP technology considering that each monitor is 1920x1080.

Ehh, I guess I'll have to wait for my shipment.

You can't because that's the way existing single-GPU cards are made - two RAMDACs, meaning two outlets that use RAMDAC. DP doesn't use RAMDAC, hence its value. It is disappointing, but not surprising, that AMD didn't change this for AMD 6 series, which is just a revision of 5 series. And the reason the 5 series only has 2 RAMDAC is because Eyefinity was thought up by like two guys on the entire team of engineers and they had to get it on there ASAP with as little cost as possible.
