Eyefinity - 6850 - WoW

Hello!

I just recently setup Eyefinity (3x 21.5, 1920 each), and it looks fantastic.

Specs:

GPU: 6850
Mobo: P55A-UD4P
CPU: i5 760 (OC: 3.8 ghz)
RAM: 12Gb

I mostly play World of Warcraft, and noticed not so good frame rates. I've tried searching around, but my question is this:

If I Crossfire the 6850, will I see noticeable gains in WoW? I really only care about the game. From what I've read, WoW doesn't like Crossfire/Eyefinity setups, so hopefully someone has some insight.
 
World of Warcraft works just fine with crossfire, though I don't know about in regards to crossfire and eyefinity at the same time.

You're probably going to hit a VRam limitation with that card though running in eyefinity, something crossfire won't really help with.
 
Single 6850 will struggle with EF, no doubt. You did load the most recent CAPs when you set up the drivers, right? What does Afterburner say about your framerates?

You have two options, upgrade to Crossfire with another 6850 or buy a single 7970 GHz edition.

Crossfire and EF are hit and miss, I don't play WOW so I can't tell you about that game in particular.

I downloaded and install the latest CAPs, but I wasn't able to find out what it does. I checked the Application settings under Gaming in CCC to see if it would be there, but saw nothing. Any ideas?

I'll check Afterburner, as I don't have it installed, I'll post back.

7970 is a little out of my price range :(
 
It's not uncommon to have to troubleshoot or work through issues with either Xfire or Eyefinity. When using both you are increasing your chances of running into problems.

Eyefinity users will advise you to go with a powerful single card solution over xfire if possible.

IMO a 7950 is the entry level single card for Eyefinity especially if you are trying to get maximum performance while not paying top $ since it can be overlocked to stock 7970/670 performance (even beating those from time to time). Even with a single 7950 don't expect to run games on max detail on 3 screens but they do deliver impressive performance.


You could possible get by with a 7870 for 3 screens if you are only playing WoW. I feel confident in saying it would give you about double the framerate you are getting with your 6850 now but if you try to play something like BF3 you'll have to turn down lots of detail to keep playable framerates.

If your motherboard supports crossfire (and your PSU has enough juice) then your cheapest solution is just getting another 6850. Should perform about as well or a little better than a single 7870. If getting another 6850 means a new mobo and PSU then look into a 7950 (or 7870 if you only play older games but it won't be future proof for Eyefinity without considering xfire eventually).

Thanks for the detailed post. I'll keep an eye out for those cards, and see what I can grab.

Missed your last line. My mobo does support Crossfire, and I have enough juice in my PSU, which is why I'm considering it.

6950 is the cheapest, and I don't really want to overpay. Which card would be the safest for my setup?

I would not go for the last generation solution, so stay with the current one which is 7870 or higher.
 
Does anyone have a card higher than 7870 and running Eyefinity? Any input on this, I'd really appreciate it.

I have a system with an ASUS RF4, 3930K,16GB RAM and two 7970s in CF.

My Eyefinity is actually fine, but some games are great and others suck in CF.
Currently I am playing driver roulette with DeuaEx:HR.
The current 12.6 drivers see freezing every few minutes, 12.6 beta and 12.7 betas same.

I'm going back to 12.4 and see what happens.

It's not just the 7900 series that has problems.......I had some similar issues with my 6970 triple Crossfire too.

I'm seriously thinking of ditching AMD for good(I've said this before a couple of times).
 
I really didnt think world of warcraft worked with crossfire. If i were you, id sell the 6850 and go for a 7950.

edit: i guess i was thinking of the earlier versions, it looks like crossfire / sli does make a good difference. Still, i think you would be happier with a 7950 then two 6850s...

Ok, as someone who fought this tooth and nails. WoW + Eyefinity + Crossfire = shit turd on a stick

Here's the problem, Eyefinity works with wow, but it has to be Full screen windowed mode. Crossfire works with wow but it has to be non-windowed full screen mode. They do NOT work together...

If you want WoW in eyefinity then get a quad core you can OC and the fastest single AMD vid card you care to purchase. My 7970 can max out WoW in 5760x1200 but you will still get slowdowns in major cities and some raids.
