OK... so i plan on going 3x1 eyefinity in the near future... just not sure which card to get

i know that for the 3x1 cards you need to get the DP active adapter (which is ~$100)...

do you need to get one for the 3x2 cards? i see they come with a bunch of little non active adapters in the box... and the cards seem to run $100 more than the 3x1 cards... if thats the case that you dont need one i would rather spend the $100 and get a slight performance boost

^ just an example to show the little adapters it comes with... there is 2 dvi, 1 hdmi, and 2 DP looks like

i know the 3's you cant use the DVI and HDMI its one or the other... just curious to find out if thats the case with the 6's

Let's say if you could buy 3 ATI 5770 for the same price as this Eyefinity 6 5870 card, would you get better performance for 6 monitors?

To answer the first question, the 5870 E6 edition has 6 DP outputs but still has the capability to output 2 DVI signals via passive adapters. If you need a 3rd DVI output you still need an active adapter. The HDMI signal is the same as the DVI signal.. so 1x DVI 1x HDMI is the same as 2x DVI, and all 5xxx can only do 2x DVI plus as many DP ports the manufacturer can fit on the card.

For the 2nd question, you can only use the display ports on the primary 5770, so you would still be limited to 3 monitors even if the 3 5770's have more horsepower. I believe one company has a 5 port 5770 though. But not 6.

perfect thats the answer i was looking for

ill stick with the 5870 1gb :)

Let's say you use 3x5770 in regular non crossfire mode, extend your desktop to 6 monitors using windows. In effect you would have the horse power of a 5770/2 ... Would you be able to play Eyefinity games this way?

Does a 5870 E6 means that you will play eyefinity games a 1/6 horse power of a 5870 if you set up for 6 monitors?

Check this out from a review on Hexus: "Using the supplied adapters, the Eyefinity 6 Edition card supports only two legacy (DVI, VGA or HDMI) displays, so you'll need to ensure you have DisplayPort connectivity on the majority of your monitors. Users aren't required to use all six outputs, of course, but there's a distinct sense of gratification in knowing that you have the ability."

The extra cost of the E6 models is in the adapters supplied, per card, 2 miniDP to DP,2 miniDP to DVI and one miniDP to HDMI.......plus there is an extra 1GB of video memory.

I use two E6 cards in CrossfireX for my 3x1 Eyefinity. The extra memory has been very beneficial vs my old 1 GB models.

I use one DP and two DVI connections.:D

Hi Magoo,

Sorry to hijack this thread, so a little off topic. Could you report whats improved in eyefinity as a result of your upgrade to the E6 versions (eg - has the stutter issue got better ot even disappeared)? I'm thinking about doing a similar upgrade from dual 1gbs. Thanks.
