eye strain from 2405?

I hate to start another thread on the 2405fpw but I have to.

I just got mine and it was a trade up from the viewsonic vp912b.

I have finally setup the monitor properly (gamma, color, brightness, and etc) and I am loving what I see.

The only problem is that my eyes hurt if I look at the screen for awhile. What could be causing this?

I NEVER had this with any other crt or lcd.

The only thing I can think of is the brightness. Mine is just a tad below what it comes as default. I read some people dropping it to 25 but my nvidia will onlyi drop it down to 40 and that is WAY to dark.

Any ideas would be GREATLY appreicated.
 
It is a big screen and takes some getting used to. I have a 23" and I can't say I had eyestrain but it was uncomfortable. You aren't sitting too close are you?

Surely there must be someone out there who has experienced this when they went to the 2405?

I really love this monitor now and want to keep it but this eye strain is killing me. :(

I can't say that I have had any eyestrain at all with it. In fact, I find it much more comfortable to view that any other monitor i've owned. The only thing I can think of is maybe the native resolution is too small for your eyes...

You are not dropping the brightness through a nvidia control panel only are you? You'd lower your brightness through the controls on the front of the monitor, the nvidia controls won't dim the screen, only darken the picture.

I find even 0% at times on my 2005fpw can be too bright, at least in a dark room.

So try lowering the brightness of the screen to 25% as starters, then in the nvidia controls lower the gamma to like 0.7 from the default 1.0. If this made the screen too dim, since you probably saw the change happen before your eyes, leave the screen for 5 minutes, come back, and you won't even know it can get brighter.

wow, I'm not the only one!!

I came from a VP171b and I'm experiencing the same thing you are
it's hard to put a finger on it, but it's just not easy to look at for long periods of time
it's kinda like the back light is just overpowering the colors - even the blacks look bright
and they shouldn't - I think if the screen is showing black, it should look just like it's off, but it's MUCH brighter

I've all but decided to keep my VP171b, return the 2405FPW, and see if I can get a nice HDTV for around $600, since movies look like utter shit on this thing so far.

Sounds like you have a defective panel there boss. The black levels on mine are incredibly black (far and away the darkest of any LCD I have ever used), and darker than my very good quality CRT sitting right next to it in all lighting conditions other than when the lights are completely off.

If what you mean is that when watching movies in a very dark room, then yes ALL LCD technology monitors and TVs (including LCD projection) will have imperfect black levels, and you WILL still see pure black come through as a dark to light gray, depending on the device. IMHO, if you really care about good black levels for movies, avoid LCD like the plague.
 
Well, I turned down my brightness (in 2405) to 25 and this has helped although not eliminated te problem. I am going to try to maybe turn it down a little more.

For reference, my dell is set at a brightness of 25 and the nvida brightness is set at about 96-100 (depending on what gamma I am using 1.8-2.2.

What are others setting their brightness at? Please specify both the dell and the nvida.
 
I would agree that I think your dell is not working properly and you should exchange it.

My dell has a MUCH better black level then my viewsonic (mostly because it is much more uniformly backlit then my viewsonic).

Get a new dell and then compare them.

At gamma 1.8 and 2.2 won't your display look really really washed out. I just tried 1.8-2.2 on my nvidia card and it made my 2005fpw look washed out and hurt my eyes.

Try setting the gamma to 0.7 or 0.8
 
no I meant running test patterns for 1.8 and 2.0 and then setting the gamma.

For 2.0 mine is set at 1.0 and for 1.8 mine is set at .89.
 
it's a huge display with alot of brightness glaring into your eyes at a very close distance. try sitting a few feet in front of a tv and see how your eyes feel after half an hour. imo, computer displays should not be that big. it's really doing a number on your eyes staring at that big of a light source.
 
Hey everyone,

I thought I would post my update.

I was going to return my 2405fpw because of eye strain. WHen I called to do it, dell offered to send out a new one. I wasn't interested becuase I thought my monitor was good so they offered to refund me $100. I said ok and authorized them to ship me a replacement. I figured, worst case I could sell it on ebay.

I pluged my new monitor in and....

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!! What an awesome monitor. NO EYE STRAIN!!! I didn't even have to adjust anything. Out of the box it was perfect. It was even perfect on the gamma tests. I was totally shocked.

So the bottom line was that my old dell, although it seemed perfect, had something wrong with it that was causing eye strain. My new one is perfect, no dead pixels, and WOW, what an amazing picture. To top it off, I got in, shipped, after taxes and everything, for $840!

Now I finally know what all you guys were talking about :p
