Extremely stupid question: MMORPG recommendation

One thing about Tera's sub is they introduced a way to trade game time in game (similar to EVE's plex). Right now on my server you can make the amount of money needed for 1 month game time in <2 hrs solo farming on any of the dps classes. Something to consider.

Interesting concept, how does company benefit from offering that?

Because people pay $15 for those items(edit: the item you buy in-game and then use to add a month of time to your account), so even if you buy the item in-game the company still got $15 for the month of game time you bought.

Interesting concept, how does company benefit from offering that?

Basically like mentioned above the company itself does not net loss any subs fees since the sub fee is still coming from somewhere. Total revenue might actually be higher since people who wouldn't otherwise pay a sub fee now essentially have theirs paid for by another person.

Another impact is what it has on third party real money -> in game money transactions which lets face it exists whether you prohibit it or not. Practically speaking there is no way to actually directly eliminate these so something like this instead funnels money back to the game company as opposed to third parties. I believe gold seller sites for instance were selling Tera gold for $4 for 100g? So now instead they introduce these scrolls for $15 which sell for I believe currently 1500-2000g. I guess a comparable would be prohibition.

I'd recommend The Secret World http://www.thesecretworld.com/ .

I second this.

If you want to try an MMO with a very interesting story and a very non-traditional questing and mission system, I highly recommend this game.

Where other MMOs are still using the tried-and-true WoW quest system or a variant of it, TSW is very different in the fact it's more like a multiplayer adventure RPG. And, you have to actually have to think in that game for many of the quests and missions.

I played City of Heroes since issue 2 (so maybe 7 years or so?), and really enjoyed the game. The sidekick system is great for pugs as everyone will either be same level (if you were the same or higher) or 1 level down (anything below) from the mission owner. No fighting for loot since it's random dropped, and the costume you make at level one will look the same at level 50 (unless you decide to change things). No armor changes, no crafting new weapons. You don't have to get into the crafting at all and can still be a very effective player.

That being said, the F2P update killed the game for me. I think it has to do with me being such a long time subscriber, but the nickel and dime store mentality that started showing through cheapened the game for me. On top of that, the game really is showing its age and is unecessarily hard on video for the details that you're getting.

A couple weeks ago I picked up Vindictus off Steam. It's a F2P model but where it grabs my attention is the combat system. No random rolls for hits. No setting up an attack chain and hitting the same 4 keys over and over. This game allows for your positioning to matter - you actually have to aim at your opponent and you can dodge attacks by getting out of the way.

It has it's glitches, but the combat and relatively easy mechanics so far have kept me hooked.

started with eq1, doac, wow, swg, aoc, hmm.. what else?

playing swtor atm. I see most bum on it. end game is weak sauce, etc. but I do enjoy the companion system, the ability to lvl to 50 solo, etc. Im pretty part time player anymore.. after being a raider in eq1, wow, etc.. just dont have the passion for dealing with the basement dweller uber-ists anymore

buddy at work is rec'ing secret world.. may have to give that a go..

I may try it as well, just would like to get a hold of a buddy key to try first, it looks like a very different take on a tried/true formula. Could be that thing that moves me from WoW to something else.

Diablo 3 was a disappointment to me.

Guild Wars, and soon to be Guild Wars 2 is what i recommend.

hate to say this but, if you can get past the learning curve, only one that keeps pulling me back is eve-online, they have their tournament going on right now. The upgrades are free so its best bang for your buck and the game does keep getting better, the new missile effects look really good and you get easily get a 15 or 30 day free trial

I'm also enjoying The Secret World. I am very much a non-MMO gamer but it's sucked me in so far.

Eve Online is very very good for 15.00 a month.
The last few updates changed the Ship Models and they are 100% better to look at now.

I can't really add anything to what others said.

I'd say for modern releases, Rift and Tera are probably the best.

For older games, I still think EQ1 is still very fun, but without people to play with I don't see many lasting long (it's old! 90's old) as it's pretty boring by yourself. But it's fun with others. It's also F2P at this point (with limitations.) But again, what you are limited to with the F2P is the 4 most boring classes to play, you'd have to spend money to get to play something more interesting. So if you went entirely F2P, you will likely not enjoy it much.

Tera is fun to play but once you hit endgame there's so little content that it makes Star Trek Online look packed to the brim with things to do. However you can apparently get it for $8 right now, and being able to play it for a month for $8 is a steal IMO. Leveling through the content and playing the story quests etc is definitely worth $8, but I personally don't think it's worth subbing to right now and based on what's coming as an update about a year after the game launched in Korea, probably not ever.

crazy.. but my old eq1 guild.. Fir and Fury.. is STILL out there... boggles my mind. I have to admit I have occasional nostalgia.. and consider going back.. but man.. the UI etc.. such a steep learning curve again...

Im just casually enjoying SWTOR for now... and looking forward to Planet Side 2!

I've had a hard time finding a good MMO these days. I got into WOW back in 04-06 but grew tired. I liked AOC initially until I hit level 20 then it got boring and quit. I tried since then, RIFT and SWTOR, and these games were a huge disappointment.

I highly recommend The Secret World though. Story and quests is what an MMO should be. I don't know about endgame on this, but it's defiantly sucked me in. I have to say combat is a bit boring, but hard enough to make me want to keep progressing my character.

I was surprised this game is as good as it is and has hooked me as much as it has. It came out of nowhere but I have had nothing but fun so far.

The ability wheel is great, the community there is great and the quests are nothing short of fantastic. The last MMO I played was SWTOR and I was not even able to max level. At level 47 I got too bored to go on. Although there, like here, the quests are voice acted and such-its just the acting, presentation and implementation of the quests in secret world is done far far better.

The secret world makes me feel like I'm playing an MMO based on something like Vampire the Masquerade which is one of my all time favorite pc games.

How is the walking around/combat? Everyone's saying it's god-awful and very rigid/stiff/lifeless. Does it deter at all from the overall game?

Where does "everyone" say that?

Nearly every review I've read, plus from videos it looks to be true. It looks very...DC Univesish to me, with the catatonic walking.

many of the player character animations could definitely use some improvement

the animation while walking around and using a cell phone is hilariously bad with everything above the waist being absolutely stiff and the legs just moving

monster models and animations look nice though

in terms of movement, I think combat would feel more fluid if the default movement speed was always the run speed when having the "Sprint" buff but that would probably require a lot of adjustment to skills and other things

in terms of how combat movement currently works, you can cast while moving but your cast will fail when you lose line of sight. your movement speed is slowed while casting. you move faster while strafing or running forwards than moving backwards. you can not use the "Sprint" run speed buff while in combat.

there's a 5 second CD movement ability where you can do a somersault to avoid abilities.

in terms of deterrring from the overall game, I've gotten used to it and enjoy the dual focus combat/resource management system. I had just been leveling up with a single focus through the beginning of Savage Coast and when I realized I should be using 2 focuses, combat immediately became more complex and interesting.

I've been using Blood/Elementalist which are both ranged focuses, so I have no idea how combat feels for melee.

WoW interesting quests, great pve dungeons
Rift great classes - boring quests - bad pve
The Secret World - incredibly in depth long quests (old school puzzle style), great classes(build your own class), roleplay/lore heavy, pvp felt under developed
Tera - interesting world pvp after lvl 30, boring quests, monster hunter type grinding
Guild Wars 2 - lvl through realm vs realm world pvp, pve grind safely or in realm vs realm pvp areas, arena pvp 5v5 gives you instant gear to eliminate grinding for competitive play, and there aren't quests so much as areas you explore and level at the same time. If you get through an area once, you're done with that area.

I'd choose WoW of Secret World for PVE, and Guild Wars II and WoW for pvp.

Tried Tera and got bored after a weekend.

Aion's f2p is actually pretty good.

debating on whether or not to get GW2.

I've also dropped Diablo 3. It took me longer than most to realize that right now it's simply a never ending loot grind.

The 15 level free trial lured me into trying Star Wars The Old Republic and I am definitely enjoying the game. The full voiced NPCs and quest givers adds a lot unlike World of Warcraft which is basically an encyclopedia of text. I've tried on multiple occasions to get into WoW but never could.

If story and plot is important I say give SWTOR a shot.

If you like story/plot, should try The Secret World, it looks like the next big themepark MMO (in a good way). Plus quests are actually challenging and difficult.

+1 ^^^
Granted, I am new to the game but the quests/assignments are far better than any other MMO's I have tried in the last couple years. The freedom to choose what skill you take is a welcome change, kind of like Rift was before I realized how closed off you had to be in it.
Graphics and control are pretty good. You can customize your keyboard binds for better control.

WoW is a decent choice. Especially now with the revamp quests that guide you from place to place. If you like star trek, star trek online is pretty decent too. The quests are great, though it doesnt have to much content. Ive heard the lord of the rings has a better single player experience than WoW. I started an account but never played it.

Having played both SWTOR and Secret World, games which both have voice acted quests I have to say that Swtor can't hold a candle to the Secret World when it comes to quests.

The secret world's quests are much better acted and much better implemented than in SWTOR where it felt like they hired people off the street to voice the quests.

LotRO was very good, the quests/lore and atmosphere are timeless, but the combat and overall stuff you can do in the game is excellent. Worth a playthrough.

so.. about to pull the trigger on secretworld..anyone think there's value in buying the initiate pack.. or master pack etc? or just buy the game, try it before I spend anymore

I have just bought the initial game. I would never buy something like the master pack unless I had limited resources or I knew for a fact I was going to be playing for like a year or more. The other packs are mostly just for some status clothing and stuff.

Same here.
