I got a probelm with Half Life 2 on my computer and it really really suxs =(

As you read from my title, you would probably have guessed what my problem was? Just to let y'all know, my computer is pretty decent....Just let me list out the specs now =)

Processer : Pentium 4 2.8GHZ C
Operating System : Windows XP Home SP2
Mobo: MSI 865 PE Neo 2
Ram : 512mb 3200 DDR SDRAM
VGA Card : Gainward 6800 GT Golden Sample
Storage : 120GB Harddrive
Soundcard : Creative Audigy 2 ZS

Anyway, I got Hl2 from the store and after 1 hr of agonizing wait, I finally manage to get it to run. Set all my settings to 1280 x 1024 plus maximum for everything and ran fraps at the sametime. However at the starting (When G-Man comes out), the framerates were strong at 100, but when it started game started changing to the train part, framerate dropped to 30 - 40 fps! I thought, something was wrong? I read in forums that it stayed at above 60fps most of the time. This time, I tried turning down my settings at 1024 x 800 with all settings low..But for some reasons, I got roughly the same framerates? What was happening?

Oh and btw, my PSU is 480watts or 520watts (cant rem) so that should not be the problems. CPU Temperature is around 55 - 60 and VGA card is bout 60+ too.

I searched from forum to forum trying out all the fixes avaliable to no avail. I even defragged my computer my the low framerates still didn't go away. Then one day, I tried formating my computer. After which I got all the latest drivers, bios etc for my computer avaliable. I installed HL2 and even defragged it according to advice avaliable. However the problem still did not go away.

I tried most of the drivers whether it was the 61s , 70s or whatever but it showed no difference in performance. I tried runnigng the card at stock speeds and overclocked it but it didn't work. I tried overclocking my cpu to 3.2GHZ but it still showed no difference!

My fate in NVIDIA is now being sorely tested. First it was stuttering framerates in games which i managed to solve in the end and nows this. I had ATI 9600 Pro last time and I never had this many problems! Could anyone tell me whats happening and how to solve it!

ThankS!

PS : CS Source StressTest gimmes about 90fps at 1280 x 1024 with everything at maximum.

You will get stuttering and low frame rates when the game is loading various things - usually sounds I find. It really doesn't sound like a graphics card problem. Having more system ram would help greatly. When you actually get playing (and have no pesky NPCs trying to talk to you) then you'll find that it becomes a lot smoother as it won't keep having to load sounds and the like.

I tried playing for bout 30 mins! No difference in performance tho!

Any other suggestions?

I tried turning down everything to minimum pls running at 800 x 600.

No difference in fps at all.

hmm, then that means its a cpu problem, try turnin off all programs when you goto play, also run spybot s&d and spywareblaster, hopefully it will fix your problem, but if it doesnt, there might be something else eating up your systems resources

I formated my com so no spyware etc.

Will adding ram really help? I thought 512 ram was enough....

PS : Just spend a bomb on my gfx...not really keen to blow more money =p

Try disabling any on-access anti-virus program running.

More ram is probably not the answer, maybe different ram. I'm running it at 1154 on a 2.4c (at stock speed atm) w/an ic7 max3, 512mb xms and an AIW9600Pro w/2x/2x and medium tex, I'm getting about 65-70. If everything was right, you should be kicking my system to the curb. I'd run some diagnostic utilities and see if everythings reporting correctly. Do you have a slow HD?

You haven't got 'wait for vertical sync' enabled within HL2 have you, or do you have vsynch forced in the NVidia control panel? It should be set to 'application controlled' in there.

I got no anti-virus at the moment and vertical sync is off in both control panel and in hl2.

How do you check if you have a slow HD?

Are you leaving the graphics settings at the game's recommended default? My amd 2400 gets set at 1024x768 and it runs pretty smooth, albeit at medium textures.

Memory, memory, memory.

Here's my setup that runs the default settings fine:

PIV 2.8
1GB HyperX PC3200
Gainward 6800GT Golden Sample (nice taste, ;) )
Soublaster Audigy Platinum
2x80GB Western Digital drives
Gigabyte 8KNXP motherboard (I875)

I checked memory load while running game and my system was using between 470-500MB. I would really check this out. I don't know what the fps are, but I don't notice any slowdown.

It's been said before, and i'll say it again....get more ram....a gig is about the norm for not being the bottleneck nowadays.
