Hi guys, I'm all new in here. I hope some of you can help me with my problem.

My 4870x2 is running extremely hot. Yesterday I had the card out of the cabinet but weather or not it has to do with it getting so hot I can't really say since it has been a couple of weeks since I last monitored the heat. I mean, maybe I have done something wrong when I plugged it in again or maybe it has been like this for a week, I can't say.

Right now the card is idleling at 63c with a fanspeed set in Rivatuner to 48%. If I crank it all the way to 100% and wait for 15 minutes it can only get as low as 52c.

When I play, after about 5 minutes the fan automatically sets to 100% and the temp says 95-99c, even though the fan it set to a 100%.

The card is fully plugged into the slot. The 8pin is plugged in and the 6pin is plugged. What I don't get is I have 3 different 6pin. One is labeled "pci express v2", the other is "v3" and the third is labeled "pci express v4". I don't know which 6pin is the correct to use but I have tried them all and it didn't seem to make a difference.

The fan may have a little dust on it, but nothing I would call critically.

This is my cabinet THERMALTAKE ARMOR VA8000BWS

I really hope some of you could come with some ideas, I'm totally lost.
Thanks in advance

sure you have good case cooling? ambient isnt too high?

I had a paid of them in xfire and only had to run the fans @ 45% tops even gaming and hit high 80's

100% is like a hair dryer

I think my cabint cooling is ok. I don't know how to check it. I mean, at the bottom it's a little hot due to my gpu but at the top of the cabinet it's pretty cool. But it all worked fine a couple of weeks ago and nothing in the cabinet cooling department has changed since. This is just SO weird and frustrating. I have now put a thermostat in the middle of the cabinet to check ambient temp.

The ambient temp in the middle of the cabinet seems to be around 25c.
Can I exclude it has anything to do with me pluggin in some wrong sticks? It wouldn't be possible to do that or what?

Are you sure there's little dust in the card itself?

I'd take off the heatsink to double check...usually 4870x2s dont idle that high.

My 4870x2 after several monthes in a filter covered case still idles at 40C ish.

I'd disable rivatuner for the time being, and use your Catalyst Control Center to run the card's fans manually.

Set the fan at 50% in the CCC and see what you have at idle.

I had dual 4870 X2s and never saw more than 60C-65C at full load with the fans set manually in CCC to 48%.

If riva has your fans at 100% you wouldn't be able to hear yourself think in the room with the computer, that thing is LOUD on 100%.

Could you please link to an ONLY CCC download. I haven't installed CCC since win7 installs the driver automatically but not the CCC.

It seems I found it myself but it is for vista 64 and I have win7 64. It's installed but when I run the exe. nothing happens at all. Is CCC not compatible with win7?

But what is wrong with rivatuner, it works fine and CCC won't solve my problem, I think. Why should it, my card will be extremely hot weather or not CCC is installed.

My concern is that Rivatuner may not be functioning properly in your situation.
That's why I recommended to download a known workable piece of software to control your fans manually, to see if that will help.

It is not normal for a functioning 4870 X2 to run as hot as you were saying.

Take the card outside and use compressed air to clean it. It's possible the heatsink has built-up dust the shroud is hiding.
