Wow! Very nice, thank you. That has informed me that I am pushing 553 watts from my system. My current PSU is an Enermax Noisetaker 600 watt.

Thats pushing it kind of close, don't ya think? Is that safe?

God, I wish one day they'd show amps..or maybe I'll make one some day. :p

If you are the author when will amps per rail be available?

If I'm not mistaken, the 3300+ and the 3400+ both run at 2000 MHz not 1800.

I run that calculator based on 100% usage.....but realistically how often do you reach 100% usage???

I appreciate your comments!

I've fixed the values for Sempron 3300+ and 3400+

Regarding amps per rail... I did start a version 2 of my calculator but it's stuck right now because of lack such information. It is almost impossible to gather this information especially when half of the manufacturers do not provide it to the public :(

About 100% usage. Realistically you probably won't reach it. But I'd be safe if I have an overhead.

Also, there are such factors as surge current during start up and electrolytic capacitor aging so I'm going to add another field with additional 10% to 30% to compensate them.

You could make a list of things you need amperage values for and post it around. Other people have the equipment to measure this stuff, too, and inquiring minds want to know. I know a few people here at [H] would be glad to help you out...

Ok I'm confused now. My APC Battery Backups reports that I am only using 268 watts right now. When I start up a game and start playing (City of Heroes or FEAR for example) and go out to quickly check my status, it states I am only using 311 watts. So which do I believe? The 535 watts that the online calculator says or the APC back ups?

I'll think about it, but I don't want to continue what I've started with amps per rail if information is hard to gather. If those few people stop helping or won't be able to do it later - calculator will be dead in the water since we have so many components coming out of productions every year. I hope you understand.

The calculator shows you the max pick consumption assuming that all of your components work at 100% - which is almost theoretical.
Running one game doesn't mean that your PC in under 100% load.
For example, to simulate approximate reality you would need:

1. Start DVD encoding process.
2. Start CD burning process.
3. Start HDD file copy process (let's say 200-300GB OR less - depends on the capacity and shock resistance!).
4. Start Prime95 (CPU and RAM stress test).
5. Start 3DMark06 - Shader Model 3.0 graphics test in a loop at 1600x1200 resolution and with enabled 4x FSAA and 16 anisotropic filtering (for graphics cards that do not support multi-sampling antialiasing with HDR, do not enable it, for those who do not have SM 3.0 support, the third game test from the 3DMark05 should be used).
6. If your PC is still alive - you can check your system power consumption.

Well, you have an idea. Many of you will not be able to do all these steps at the same time but at least try DVD encoding, Prime95 and 3DMark.

I would have to disagree with that. Much of the information is floating around in this forum and on the web. It takes more work but for the calculator to be of use it needs to detail amp distribution.......watts are irrlevant. There was a excel sheet at DFIstreet a while back that had attempted to this very thing but I haven't seen it recently and of course there was takaman.

I have to agree - without specifying what rails need what amps, people could end up with atx1 psu's with way too much amperage on the +5 and not enough on the 12. However, I'm having trouble finding specs for some of the "miscellaneous" components in my system; DVD drive, fans, that kind of thing. Spectre, any ideas?

DVD drives and optical drives are on the drive themselves. It will give you a 5v and a 12v draw since it has logic and motors. Same for floppies, etc.

Fans may/may not have amp draw on them, look on the sticker.

Another question for the PSU gods...

When I start gaming, my +12 drops to like +11.68 then flops back up to +12.10 then to +12, then flops down again, etc. Is this a problem?

Is this related to the "rails" thing? I have too much draw on my main rail or something?

What are you using to measure? Also, 11.68 is well within spec.

Asus PC Probe II.

So long as it's in spec, I'm happy. :) My other volts stay rock steady as far as I can tell.

The problem is that we are talking about hundreds of components and a big chunk of them are without rail info, especially video cards.

Another problem that not all of components of the same class have the same amps (like HDDs for example: 7200rpm IDE - bunch of diff. brands - different amps).
Takaman tried to list them by brand and what happened? Just a few components and I bet he did realize that there in no way to keep it up-to-date, unless you guys all work at those factories and can provide me with info every time something new is coming out

I saw a few calcs with amps... they all very old - no use :(

well, start throwing some links and rail info at me and I'll see what I can do.
email: info@extreme.outervision.com

EDIT: I think it is possible to gather the info, of course with your help guys ;)
but I think it allways will be not up-to-date and then you all will call it the worst calculator ever!
Damn, I feel like I'm up to it again! You guys better be good with info cause I don't want to feel sad again :D

Here is the key though takaman left you able to put in your own info so it was infinately expandable. You could at any time select HDD and input each rail if your hardware wasn't there. That is waht made it not just good but brilliant.

The how to buy sticky has some links....not all...but some. If you want info to do it let me know nad I will be happy to put together a sticky to collect the info you want.

We need a good calc. If all you need is the info we will work to get it for you.

Yep, all what I need is the info. If you guys can gather it - I will finish version 2!

can someone please explain to me why would i need a 700w psu?
i tried using the calcualtor to spec out a
930, oc to 4ghz at 1.375v
2 stick ddr2
1 7900gt
2 sata
1 dvd rom
1 dvd rw
1 floppy
1 sound card
1 fan controller
1 front lcd display
3 120mm fan
2 usb devices

with 15% surge compensation and 20% capacitor aging with the psu ustilisation at 100%.

is it realistic for me to need a 700w psu or do i need to reduce my peak psu utilisation?

No it is not realistic. Use the PSU calculators and INSTRUCTIONS indicated in the sticky to get an accurate idea.

i have followed the instructions in the sticky. and i have adjusted this time by reducing psu utilisation to 85 %, this gives me a wattage requirement of 598w.

now somehow this seems unrealistic, using the setup i have mentioned above, but i don;t know what i am doing wrong. would you be so kind as to point out my stupidity?
thanks

Neither takaman nor zippy have a PSU utilization..........so what are you doing wrong? I would venture to guess using eXtreme's calculator not the ones provided in the sticky.

I think I know what is the problem. You probably selected Dual Processor in System Type. Please read the foot note # 1 ;) Dual Core CPU is a single physical CPU.

Based on your configuration you should have around 512W (see the image below).

I'd like to thank you for all your efforts. Your calculator does make it easy to find out how powerful one's PSU has to be (I'm using your calculator in my method, see sig).

No not really. For the reasons we have covered in this thread previously.

mnemonik23 have you given up trying to correct the deficencies in the calculator?

You mean the part about watts being irrelevant? Did you actually read my page thoroughly?

454Casull said:

Yes I did.

I wasn't addressing your page in my previous comment just your assertion that the calculator makes it easy to find how powerful a PSU is needed (which as mnemonik23 is aware from previous interactions I take exception with the method used as it does not provide the correct information). You didn't ask for a critique of your site. I could critique it and point out a number of errors, mistatements, etc. if you would like.....but that would be an entirely different thread.
