Hey I have an NF7-S and I noticed that funky extra power connector...is it required? It seems to run fine without being connected...so whats the purpose?

this little plug that has connection for four wires was added when the P4 (if memory serves) entered the market. The purpose was to ensure a stable flow of power to the new, very power hungry and sensitive to power fluctuations cpu. That is the "why"
now why does it work with out the additional power plug in? Unlike the Pentium 4, the Amd chip is not as sensitive to power fluxes ( at least compared to early p4's) and it is not required as the power draw from the standard atx connect to the board can supply adequate enough juice.
Now, if you decide to overclock, my suggestion would be to go ahead and plug it the additional power source plug in, as it adds stability.
