External USB2 HDD switches off randomly?

Hi guys,

My external USB2 HDD keeps switching off at random intervals on one of my systems but not on the other. It runs fine on my old 1.2Athlon but on my newer rig, 3500+ with Gigabyte mobo it runs for a while ok then switches off and I hear the USB pop sound and a yellow warning triangle appears in the taskbar but if I click it the icon just disappears.

Any ideas on this one folks, its driving me nuts!

try another USB port, probably one going bad or it is not a high speed port...

Tried them all, is there a way of removing the USB drivers and reinstaling them?

control panel / system / device manager

find your USB devies and "uninstall" - reboot, should pick them back up.

Also check in your bios to see if you have tjhe option to set your USB device to FullSpeed or HighSpeed, i know most Abit boards have this at least.

control panel / system / device manager /usb root hub

in the energy management disabel the point
"device can shut off port" <--- May not be the same words, I am using german version of XP

do this at all Root Hubs
this should help.

How is this external enclosure powered, via USB or external adapter?

Its via an external adapter.

Thanks for all your replies, something I didnt think of until just now though is that I installed my XP and stuff last year when I built the rig. Only a month later did I diagnose that a random crash/reboot problem was caused by a faulty memory stick. So Im thinking maybe my USB drivers have been corrupted possibly?

I'll check out your answers and try them out first though.

Thanks once again,

Rikki

My external unit had a hardware problem. It had one of those noisy coils with the heatshrink around it to shut its mouth up. Well the little bugger finally wiggled its way outa the solder joint. Drive would work fine for weeks, the the hd would spin down for a split sec, then spin up again. some times windows didnt care, some times it did.

have you updated the firmware lately? my enclosure used to corrupt my data randomly before i did...

and my usb enclosure with not external ps used to shut off on some computers too, that was due to not enough power tho..
