A friend is IMing me about her problem, which she has had for a while now. Anyway, I am not there to look at it, but this is all I know so far:
She says she has had the problem since she bought an external CD drive and then brought it back to the store because it didn't work (could be same problem).
She has both a Maxtor and a WD, storebought external drives.
Her USB (Jump/Flash/Thumb) Drive works fine, as does all other USB stuff she owns.
At all times she has an exclaimation point on USB Mass Storage Device, drives connected or not. The description is a code 47... (reconnect the drive and 'stop' it, which has been done)
If one or both of the drives are hooked up she gets Unknown Devices.
She doesn't have another computer handy to test them on.
She has tried to uninstall the USB Mass Storage device and reboot, but it keeps coming back.
I've searched through Maxtor and WD Knowledge Bases with no luck thusfar.
I guess I really don't know enough about external USB drives, but my guess is that there is some registry key or dll that got overwritten or corrupted.
It's an XP computer, and it's fairly new... I don't know the specs, but she brought me the computer at one point, but not the drives with it
Any help or insight is appreciated.
