external thunderbolt graphics enclosure (mod, please delete previous 2)

No need to watercool, IMHO, just get a longer cable :D

They really need a disableable graphics card protocol... The power savings of a modern GPU are great, but I'd much rather have a board with a very slow 2D (or a high quality 2D IGP) IGP, with the ability to switch on my PCIe card at will.

I know. Even at the bios level, we should be able to disable pcie slots, even Sata ports being disabled would be cool

Spammer!

Joking aside, it's interesting but I wonder what that will mean as far as clutter on the desk goes. Or if other components went that route, would they follow some sort of modular stackable design. Or would everything best be left inside a case?

Options are always good I suppose.

re. previous 2 threads.
for some reason, when i clicked submit, nothing happened..This looks amazing

anyhow:

Why doesn't amd and nvidia make these types of things

An external video card that's already water-cooled would be amazing!!!!

Would be great for desktops too. U can have an easy and quick PC thats quiet

there are existing external GPU units (search for ViDock or DIY ViDock). some DIY versions allow usage of Expresscard+mPCIe (wireless/3G slot) for a pci x2 link

thunderbolt just makes thing easier with higher bandwidth inbetween. shouldn't be too difficult

no point for desktops, unless you really want a thunderbolt port on your desktop. thunderbolt is meant for mobile, desktops you have a more useful PCIe x16 slot

Looks sweet! I can't wait until we're able to easily upgrade laptop graphics with something like this. Long overdue IMHO.

thunderbolt would also be good for desktops.. one easy cable to connect fast portable 4-drive storage units..

nowadays, having a desktop is useless. laptops are very powerful, they can handle any game you throw at it... all you need is a good GPU.. if amd/nvidia comes out with an enclosure for 100 bucks, it will be nice

Desktops are like tools, same with laptops. If all you need is something to read email of course a desktop is overkill. But you cant do CAD programming or animation or even gaming to its full potential without the right tools, which a desktop fits quite well.

laptop GPU/heat build/part upgrade/parts dying for laptops.... way more hassle (and expensive) than desktop

right now, we also have USB 3.0 or eSATA, which is pretty good too
